Does the ibuprofen creme (cream) work, and for what types of inflammation? I am a big fan of ibuprofen tablets (Vitamin I, Ranger candy, etc.), but wonder if the creme has any uses. Thanks.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
I THINK it works........
I had swollen ankles for about a week and ibuprofen cream certainly seemed to help, it also had a pleasant soothing cooling effect too. A walker who was suffering with a knee injury was given some at the farmacia and his pain subsided over the next few days. As with any pain relief, would the pain have gone anyway or was it the medication? Who can tell? I try to take a half-used tube for weight reasons knowing I can replace it if necessary.

I trashed my knees on the first day out of St. Jean. The farmacia gave me a combination of 600mg Ibuprofen tablets and Ibuprofen creme. I found that the creme provided quicker relief and deadened the pain until the tablets would kick in. I also used the creme for aching shoulders and such and found it effective.

After a whole year of suffering with very painful hands with Arthritis especially on the knuckles/fingers and taking many pain killers, anti inflammatory plus visiting the specialist Doctor for an injection at the end nothing helped, except me making my own Ibuprofen cream.
I put in a 300g coconut butter cream jar, 3600mg crushed to dust ibuprofen tablets and whisked it in using a coffee maker machine.
I apply a rich load to my hand every 3 hours and the swelling has gone along with the pain.
I massage in the cream in for 10 minutes, after a week of this, I have stopped taking any oral tablets as my hands are back to normal.

Interesting solution. I can imagine that it is a big relief for you, but it is something to be careful with. If your homemade cream is much stronger than that available in the pharmacies, you should be careful of long term use. Maybe check with your doctor about possible problems with unknown concentrations of ibuprofen absorbed through the skin.

Thanks for your comment, it’s a lot safer then putting many tablets in your stomach damaging kidneys / liver

topical use is the only option for me at this moment as it’s directed on the joints and not to organs within

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
I know this is an old thread, but be careful about taking too much Ibuprofen.
The cream is absorbed into the body.
So cream AND tablets may be too high a dose.......

Check with your health care professional ;)

I have used the cream and the tablets.
Both have their uses.

Most pharmacies in Spain carry an ointment called, I believe from memory, Radio Salil. It's similar to what used to be called 'embrocation' in the UK, a cream much favoured by rugby players back in the day to thwart cramp and other muscular aches and pains. Radio Salil seems to be a concoction of aromatic oils, eucalyptus, tea-tree, menthol etc, with quite probably a little 'Vitamin I" thrown into the mix for good measure. I've seem many pilgrims lather their feet with Vaseline first thing in the morning before setting off, if my feet are aching I tend to use Radio Salil and can walk all day without any issues whatsoever.
Its also good for shoulder, knee, calves, thighs - you name it....
Some folk with sensitive skin might find that it gives a heated 'burning' sensation when first applied, so if you're not sure, apply a dab with caution first. BC :).

That word embrocation brings back youthful memories. Especially the brand "Fiery Jack" a bit smeared on the head sweat band and rubbed into the opponents faces in the scrum always brought swift, though blind, retribution. You always had to watch out in the first scrum for the hand reaching out from the opposing front line to smear some into your jocks.

Again take care with Ibuprofen.

I use, on serious advice, due to my medications, a herbal concoction known as Oriental balm, sometimes trade named Tiger Balm. I was advised on this by two separate pharmacists as even the herbs used in it do not exacerbate Ibuprofen problems with any known medication. It works for me.
