Ideas for equipment video

Hola all,

As you may have seen, I have started playing with some video content.. I am still learning, getting better at it little by little.

I was thinking about doing a few videos on equipment for the camino.. and have talked to @davebugg about maybe doing some videos together. Dave has helped a lot of pilgrims with his posts in the Equipment section of the forum.

If we do some videos on this topic, what would be some topics that you would want us to address? Ideas?

Thank you for any suggestions!

Stay safe!
Ivar

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
A selection of Camino Jewellery
I recommend several pieces by major equipment category, plus an overview that's focused on tailoring and weight management. Let me expand:
- sleep options (sleeping bag liners, sleeping bags, mats);
- pack options (various sizes, airworthiness, front-side options, auxiliary carriers aka bum bags);
- footwear (boots vs trail runners, socks, after-hours);
- accessories (laundry gear, security gear, umbrellas);
- guidebook options (and background reading);
- how to prepare your mobile phone for the pilgrimage.

A very popular workshop with the Asheville NC American Pilgrims on the Camino chapter involved what to pack for a minimalist Camino -- there were 2 presenters, one very minimalist and the other less restricted. Even a video with one person doing 'how to pack lightly' could work. Another variation would be hot vs cold weather needs. There are lots of helpful lists on this forum, but a video could be more visually instructive.

I think something on the effectiveness and utility of knee and ankle supports would be of use. Do these do more harm than good if they encourage walking when rest is appropriate. This could be aligned with an assessment of whether poles are right for everyone.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

They are all interesting and relevant topics that have been debated extensively over the years on this forum and as we all know(?), there are almost as many different opinions on most of these things as there are pilgrims. A video on these topics would need to deal with the “objective” aspects – I believe it would be unfortunate if a video (which is essentially a one-way communication form) promoted specific solutions as universally right or made recommendations related to any medical issues. This will of course place certain demands on the “producers” of the videos :)

My current idea would be an equipment video for a possible camino if travelling to Spain would be allowed but the 'normal' pilgrim life is still not allowed ( albergues etc.).
I would be very interested in this topic... on the other side it would be highly speculative about the conditions that may be under these circumstances... so I do not know if this is really a good idea for a video project.

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

I’m with Turga andothers on this - try to confine it to ‘skills’ and ‘things to think about’

How to fit a rucksack

What to think about with respect to equipment - avoiding duplication, walking, socialising , sleeping

Albergue etiquette - organising in communal space and for early departure.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

€83,-
Ivar, along the same lines of thought- currently we can attach files to our replies (photos). I wonder if we could send short (5 to 10 seconds) video clips? With today's smart phones this would be easy for pilgrims on the camino to send quick updates, questions, etc.

Hi, all. :)

Out of the blue, I was contacted by Ivar a couple of weeks back by PM, asking if I would be interested in participating an equipment related video. I never reached out to volunteer to do anything like this, but Ivar wants to continue what he had started with Mr. Brierley's 'chat' video interview, and turn it into a regular feature that encompassed various topics of interest. I was surprised by Ivar's invitation. and we have recently Skyped to have him share some of his specific ideas about this topic, and for me to offer some insights.

Having read this thread, I think what most seem to want and need with regard to gear/equipment information or discussion, is different than what I could offer. There are others on the Forum who I think would be better suited to work with Ivar on this topic.

If you would like to volunteer, please contact Ivar through a Private Message. It was wonderful talking with him, and whoever works to put out video(s) on this topic will find him a great guy to work with.

No problem Dave. Thank you for even considering it!

Good idea... some ideas for videos....
  • low tech equipment options/pros and cons (as in take clothes that you have at home and don't feel you have to buy lots of things before you can walk)
Other ideas:
  • Tips for a wet Camino - packing/drying shoes/clothes
  • Tips on hand washing clothes in an albergue setting
  • An interview explaining what happens during a Spanish pilgrim mass for non-Catholics
  • I might be an audience of one for some of these but I love history so anything to do with the history of the camino, including the more recent history, how did the various confraternities get started, who decided the modern route, interviews with some of the camino 'characters', etc,

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

€46,-
