Ireland - Room to rent recommendations?

My friend and I are backpacking through Europe and need a personal recommendation for a place to stay 5 nights in Ireland. I figured with this amazing community of travelers and Irish people someone here might be able to help.

I am looking for a place that sleeps two, preferably a couple of single beds, but if I can sleep with a stranger 2 feet away on Camino I can share a double with a friend. Near the ocean, within a couple of km, near a good pub where we can become regulars for a few days, and lots of open walking fields/trails where we can stumble over a fairie hill or find a leprechaun hiding in some ruins. A specific list to be sure but we just want to ramble a few days and enjoy our books by a pub fire.

We were thinking in the West near Galway or in the South near Ardmore.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, my trip would be enhanced with a personal recommendation from a fellow pilgrim. The years of experience of the people that haunt these boards can not be duplicated.

Price wise we are looking for something less than €100 a night.

Hi Kathy,

I cant recommend a specific accommodation unfortunately but I can recommend you visit or stay in Westport. Its a small town in County Mayo near the coast. Its easy access to Galway and also easy to get to from Dublin by rail. Day trips could include hiking Croagh Patrick mountain and boat trip to Achill Island.
Most accommodation in Ireland, hotels and B&B, are good standard and should be easy enough to get a room for less than 100 euro per night.

We will be arriving in Dublin (mid-Sept) and are staying two night( on the way to our Camino #3). We intend to rent a car.

The question we have is....

Can you anyone recommend an area, North of Dublin (we don't want to drive on the wrong side of the road in Dublin) that provides a green scenic drive and (most important) real Fish'n-Chips from a fishing harbor?

or Skerries 1hr north of city. Both good fishing villages
and have chipper!!

1 hour north of Dublin - Its an easy drive up the motorway - you can explore on of the most beautiful corners of ireland. Base yourself in Carlingford and explore Carlingford Lough a narrow fiord like body of water. You have the Cooley mountains on the south shore, and the Mournes Mountains to the north Shore. I would recommend hiking to the top of Slieve Martin in the Kilbroney Forest Park, which is just outside the village of Rostrevor. Or from Carlingford you can hike to the top of Slieve Foye. The views are wonderful and both hikes would be no problem to a couple of fit Camino heads!! For really good fish and chips I would recommend stopping at Fitzpatricks Bar and Restaurant on the way out to Carlingford.

Thank you for pointing this out Kanga. I thought this was the most appropriate section but I didn't read the description. (I may be a tech geek, but this is my first message board). Could you move us to a better location I am not sure how.

@poogeyejr the forum is far ranging in what we discuss, but we'd like to keep it camino related. So if it is general travel advice or information, perhaps better on TripAdvisor?

Hi @poogeyejr , I would recommend Doolin in County Clare in the west of Ireland. It is situated at the start/finish of the Cliffs of Moher Walk (14 or 28k), is only a few hundred meters from the Atlantic, is on the famous Wild Atlantic Way and is very close to an area of great natural beauty called the Burren which has loads of beautiful walks. The traditional music in Doolin is also world famous and people come from all over to hear it.
Google search: accommodation in Doolin. loads available.
Buen Camino.

In May of 2015 my wife and I spent three weeks in Ireland. We weren't backpacking, but rented the next-to-smallest size car that was available (a Skoda) and circumnavigated the island -- approximately 1300 miles/2100 km total. We stayed in B&Bs all but three nights (one night in a hostel in Kilkenny--in a private room--and two nights in a hotel in Dublin prior to our departure. The B&Bs averaged around 75€ per night including a hearty Irish breakfast, and all were very nice and clean. We used Rick Steves' Ireland book to find the B&Bs, and usually called the day before to reserve a room, which did not tie us into a schedule more than a day in advance. We only had to settle for our second choice of accommodations twice -- once in Waterford and again in Westport. It was a great trip, and I highly recommend traveling in that manner.
