Finished my third Camino this morning (Norte). The other two (Portuguesa and Frances) were last summer I guess at peak COVID time. Then I pretty much walked straight in to get my Compostela without queuing! Not this morning! A couple of hundred in front of me in queue!

Does anyone know how many pilgrims get a Compostela i.e. proportion? Reason I ask is I think approx 1500 Compostelas are issued each day but based on last two days in Santiago feels far more Pilgrims in town than that!

If you want to keep track of how many pilgrims arrive daily, download the pilgrim office page : www.oficinadelperegrino.com , put it on your home screen and it becomes a one tap daily reference. Yesterday ( ayer ) 1040 pilgrims arrived. I enjoy keeping up on the Way. Have fun.

Do you mean which proportion of pilgrims arriving in Santiago get a Compostela? It is an unknown quantity. Perhaps someone remembers earlier estimates of the percentages?

As to those who do get a Compostela, there's been a clear uptick in numbers since the 22nd of July, approaching the fiesta weekend. Daily Compostelas were above 1,000 while these daily numbers had been in the 600-700 range before that date. The numbers for the weekend add up to over 5,000 assuming that these pilgrims stayed in Santiago for the festivities. More than at other times of the year, in July and August the percentage and total number of Spanish pilgrims are high and they tend to go on a 1- to 2-week Camino pilgrimage that is timed to end on the weekend in Santiago. You must have been right in the centre of it all. Wonderful! ☺️

Thank you! Yes my observation after 2 days in SdC was there seems thousands of pilgrims in the city, far more then the 1-1.5k that get a Compostela daily! No factual basis on that but just seemed so many people! Even having a drink out by bus station last night everyone seemed to have walking sticks and backpacks. Huge buzz around which I have to say was great as my two previous Caminos were last year at the height of Covid.

There was a band in the square and later a chap proposed to his girlfriend which drew huge applause from the huge throng of people!

Hoping to be in SdC mid-September. Accommodation starting to look semi-full.

When are the school holidays in Galicia?

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

If you think this was busy, try coming back when Covid is just a memory.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Lucky you. Where do you live? In Australia, we’re not even allowed out of the country!
I live in Canada. We are not advised to travel for non-essential purposes. I don't expect to be back until 22 or 23 when hopefully covid is a memory.

What I was trying to indicate that even current increased numbers are significantly affected and reduced by covid.
