Apparently many busses to ponferrada at about 20 € the 2 of may

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
There could be more to this question than meets the eye. I'm flying in to Santiago on the 2nd of May, arriving at 18:30. I'd like to transfer to either A Coruna or Ferrol that evening. I could look at the bus / train timetables and see something suitable. But...... as it's a public holiday will the buses and trains run?
Sounds like it should be an easy question. Just look at the published timetables. However, anyone who lives in the UK will know that expecting a train to run from it's published start to end point on a BH weekend is very naive. Especially when it comes to trains. A good number of train journeys end up in taxis, buses or frustration as you're abandoned at an intermediate station.

Maybe MickMac is asking, do the buses and trains run as scheduled on Public Holidays? I guess a bonus question would be, do taxis charge a different rate on PHs?

Before we tackle the question whether the train traffic situation on public holidays (aka "bank holidays") in the UK and the train traffic situation on public holidays (aka "dias festivos") in Spain are similar - something I doubt 😵‍💫 - we should be clear about public holidays in Spain. The 2nd of May is not a national holiday. It's a regional holiday. It is not a public holiday in Galicia, simply a normal Monday.

I see six bus connections and two train connections from SdC to Ponferrada on Monday 2 May. I can book a bus or train ticket right up to the moment where I have to enter my credit details and complete the payment. Perhaps @MickMac can be more precise where the booking stalls for him?

@Kathar1na cleared up the fact it is not a holiday. But regarding going to Ferrol from SDC: take the bus. Its much faster and there are many more departure times (at least that was the case last August). The bus station is across the tracks from the train station and is accessed by the new pedestrian bridge. Lastly, its really cool going over the bridge at Pontedeume on the bus.

What site are you using for train.

A selection of Camino Jewellery
I booked a bus on Alsa recently and the system itself may have been having some glitches. Normally, it is easy to book…but it took about 6 r 7 tries from USA to work, which it normally doesn’t. Persevere. today the system appears to be working fine..

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

Hi. Sorry to tell you are wrong. The 1st of May is a national holliday, and its Sunday. In these circunstances, the national holliday is moved to Monday, except in Madrid where the 2nd of May is a regional holiday. In that community the 1st of May´s holiday is moved to the 3th of may. A very looooong wekend.

The 9th edition the Lightfoot Guide will let you complete the journey your way.
Thanks everyone booked train 08.35 leaving Santiago 2nd May to ponferrada I think I got locked into a remote booking site ticket booked.

I am happy to be corrected. All the websites that I checked said that, in 2022, in Galicia the replacement day is not the 2nd of May but the 17th of May.

For example the Xunta de Galicia: https://www.xunta.gal/hemeroteca/-/...tendra-como-festivos-propios-los?langId=es_ES

Did they change it?
My fault. You are rigth. I´d check it and in Galicia and other communities have changed the national replacement day by theirs regional replacament day. I´d forgotten that legal possibility.
Looks like you know my country better than myself.

Not at all, I feel sometimes ashamed that I know so little about Spain. Which is why I particularly enjoy posts from forum members like you when they allow us to learn a little more about their country and their language. In this case, it's simply because I am aware of regional differences (anywhere) and I checked dias festivos en España 2022 online for what feels like 5 million times before I posted my comment.

Monbus.es/en website shows their buses are operational on May 2nd with 7 buses leaving from SDC bus station to Ferrol, scheduled over the day from 9 am to 8:30 PM. The last two buses depart at 7:30 PM and 8:30 PM (under 90-minute ride), so you should be able to make either of those from Santiago. I plan on using this line myself later in May for my journey.

Thanks Jim. The Monbus site's a bit glitchy though! It didn't like the date on the first attempt and now it's lost all arrival points! The 19:30 sounds a little ambitious but the 20:30 sounds like a winner.

Yes, that site is sometimes tempermental! Cost for the ticket was listed as €8.10 if you didn't get that far. If you are fortunate enough to get into the site with bus service from the airport to Santiago, check that out and make sure that you can make the bus leaving for Ferrol. If there isn't a public bus going out shortly after your flight arrives, there's always taxi services to get you into town. It's at least 10 to 12 km from the bus station in town, and last time I was in SDC (2017), the taxi fare was around €20 to €25. Best wishes for a buen camino!
