Julia Child and Santiago???!!!

Last week, my hubby and I were watching a few episodes of the 1963 public television series "The French Chef," hosted by the amazing Julia Child. We were on episode 4? 5? 6? and she was doing the 28 minute show on scallops.

Coquille Sant Jacques, to be precise.

As she was introducing the recipe, she went into the explanation of why this dish was named "Coquille Sant Jacques."

Lo and behold, she goes into the full story, talking the Camino de Santiago de Campostelle, explaining who St. James was, the significance of the shell, etc. An incredible rundown, in about 1 minute, of the Camino.

I was stunned. Since when did she know all this stuff about the Camino (yes, I know, I know, people were walking it in 1963, I'm just sayin')?

Hats off, Julia, a pilgrim AND a pioneer.

PS - I'll have to keep watching more episodes. Maybe she has snuck in an episode on how to make Spanish tortilla, which I have yet to come close to mastering.

Wooo...that is the hand of fate, right there! A chef's hand, of course.
I am impressed that Julia could condense the convoluted history of Saint James, the significance of the scallop, and the Way itself in one minute. She was one impressive lady. But did Julia Child actually walk the Camino de Santiago de Compostela? And what episode will she bake the Camino tarta de Santiago?

Well, it would not be hard to dig up the history of that name, which of course she would have done before putting that segment together.
But Julia Child walking the camino? Hardly likely. But it is a funny image.

... Maybe [Ms. Child] snuck in an episode on how to make Spanish tortilla ...

I would like to learn how to make it too.

Is anyone else starting to miss the pilgrim meals typical of the Camino Frances?

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

I picture her with a walking stick, not hiking poles. Sturdy shoes, of course.
