Just after thoughts on shoes - Altra Lone peak Neoshell

Time of past OR future Camino
September (2017)
Hey,

Just after thoughts on shoes.

I have been trying to get on my Camino for a few years now, but new additions to the family, building a house and earthquakes have meant lots of changes of plans. I have come to the realisation that there will be no perfect time to go, so now I plan to just go.... However, all these changes of plans have resulted in major re thinks about what I plan to take with me, and it has been a constant culling process in my head. I like trail runners, and have been training in them for a few months. But I hate wet feet. My favourite runners are Altra lone peak. They have brought out a neo shell version. What to people think these would be like to walk in September?

I live in NZ and I will have to order these from the states as the neo shell doesn't seem to be available here. As that will be an expensive endeavour, I was after peoples thoughts before I went ahead. I see it seems that a lot of people believe that waterproof shoes = hot, sweaty feet. But is that just gore tex or e-vent. I don't actually have much of an issue with hot feet, originally I am from Australia and have worn thermal socks year round there, so I might have just answered my own question, but anyway..... Ideas?

When I walked the Frances in 2015, most of it was in September (1-21). It rained on me 1-1/2 walking days. That's it.
Otherwise, apart from a few cloudy, dreary days, it was dry and beautiful. Some chilly mornings and evenings, which were nice. Put on my fleece pullover, but still wore shorts.

I would also not expect much rain in September. Given that you can't even try on those shoes without ordering them from afar, I would say you should not worry about getting a waterproof version. Just as there is no perfect time for the Camino, there is no perfect shoe for all the conditions you might encounter. Take shoes that you can get and test at home.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
I'll be walking in September in the regular Lone Peaks. They are breathable and will dry quicker. I bought the Men's version because my feet are so wide. I love them completely.

I'm walking the CF in a couple of weeks in quick dry Altra lone peak trail runners. Am expecting maybe snow and almost certainly spring rain. At the last minute, did give into a moment of fear and bought online a pair of waterproof socks. Took them for an 8 km test walk last Sunday and while they fitted perfectly my feet felt like they were in a sauna. Thinking my waterproof socks will be staying at home and instead I'll be packing a pair of wool socks and making sure I always have a dry pair of socks in my pack. But if you have similar concerns maybe the waterproof socks with the shoes you already have would be a cheaper option than ordering another pair of shoes?

I walked the CF last April/May in Altra lone peaks. It did rain some, there was lots of mud in places, but I found that the mesh dried quickly. I used 2 pairs of socks, liners and wool, and my feet never felt wet. Also, I hike in them regularly in the mountains, where they sometimes get wet in streams. Still, no real issues.

I would not get the waterproof ones -- but that's just me.
