Am taking half of September and October off in 2013. Can't wait. Looks like I am going to fly from the US to Madrid and then to Pamplona. Not sure after that and the flights may change before I book them but at least I got approved for the time off. Whats the best way to get to St. Jean from Pamplona. In looking at other posts it seems that there is a bus in the summer but I may miss that as it will be around the 16 or 17th. that I get to Pamplona.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

There is a bus from Pamplona Monday through Saturday all year for Roncesvalles, but from there you will need to take a taxi.

Buen camino!

Why not fly to PAris or Toulous and from there to the nearest point of the trail in France? if you have the time- do it. if you plan on a month and a half I highly recommend starting from France (GR 65)

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
why are you flying into Madrid if your plan is to start fom SJPDP? Fly into Paris- Biarritz- bus to Bayonne- train to SJPDP.

If you have to get to Pamplona, I paid 9 Euros a (full) van ride operated by Express Bouricott from the Pamplona Bus Station to SJPDP (late May).

NCfishboy:

Flying into Madrid is a much better option than Paris. You can then fly, train or bus to Pamplona. Then bus to Roncesvalles and cab to SJPdP. You could also just choose to start from Pamplona or Roncesvalles, many people do.

Another reason to choose Madrid, it is much easier/cheaper to get to than Paris from Santiago for your return flight.

Joe

Any websites I can look at for travel from pamplona to Roncesvalles. It seems like it would be easy to get a taxi the last bit, but not sure where to look for the bus or train from Pamplona to Roncesvalles.

Luggage from SJPP to Roncevalles
I have never gone from Madrid to SJPP but it seems a bit more complicated to do it that way. I loved transitioning into the pilgrimage from Paris. There is a fantastic hostal (Maubuisson on Rue des Barres) in the heart of Paris across the river from Notre Dame and just a couple of blocks from the Tour de St Jacques which is a wonderful place to visit before setting off. The train to Bayonne and the SJPP is SO easy. In addition, there is one continuous momentum towards Santiago. Maybe you have definitively decided on Madrid but if not, it may be worth re-visiting consideration of Paris.

I have to agree. So many people have looked into this and decide to get to SJPDP from France. If anything, due to the fact that the lines of transportation from France are more direct and established, even more so now with Express Bouricott cessation of services Pamplona-SJPDP.
