Knitting on the Camino

Moving this thread to a new location as suggested by Bridgid and Peter. Thanks to those who made suggestions about ways of dealing with weight. Indeed I have thought about sending yarn along the way and sending my finished socks on to Santiago.

I have done a little searching for yarn shops along the camino, but there's not much to be found. I'm thinking I will photograph my works in progress with all the monuments along the way, and occasionally with a Santiago statue if that doesn't seem to sacrireligous. Anyone who has other suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

And yes, I would need to jump on the idea of a book before Kaffe Fassett gets to it. The man is everywhere. I went to a workshop he offered in Vancouver and was underwhelmed. And he insulted one of the participants for using variegated yarn and now he offers his very own self-striping sock yarn - wonder if he ever knit a sock?

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

€46,-
The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
I'm known as Mrs Sock to a certain group of friends as I turn up at their house from time to time and sort out the mountain of socks in their airing cupboard! No one in that house EVER puts socks into pairs and I relish the job :D So I think you should leave socks on the Camino for me to find and pair up before sending them on the Santiago.......

Good knitting

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
What a good idea! I think I going to start knitting again and knitting my own socks! It´s hard to find socks that you are comfortable with so why not. I used to knit when I was many years ago. :D

I knitted a donkey once.
How much luggage could it carry?

It accompanies Mary and Joseph from house to house in our parish during Advent, and has two little pannier baskets (made by someone else) which hold a tiny shawl crochet'ed by somebody some time, and has had other things loaded on at various times, such as oats and cornflakes for it's own feed, a little baby gown. As time has gone on the donkey's legs have got weaker, and it tends to sit down without anyone wanting it to do so. As Mary is a bit unstable on her legs too, they do best if they prop each other up.

Barbara - I believe you are the donkey expert - is this true to life?

Bridget

Generally I wouldn't bother knitting donkeys and such like - something practical like socks or a sweater is more my thing!

Nor in mine - they wear them odd so they don't get washed together, so all hope of reunification is lost.

It would be quite cool to leave knitted things for others to find and use - socks might be not a good idea, because we're all so careful about what we put on our feet. What about beanies? Self-patterning sock wool would make interesting ones!

No, he is too busy having the ideas - he needs mere mortals to do the knitting/quiltmaking/stitching for him. It's a bit like paying for someone to do a pilgrimage for you to profit your soul.

Great idea to knit on the camino!! I travel frequently and always have a pair of wool socks in progress with me. Such a small project to carry, so easy to stuff in a pocket.

I looked at your blog and found the Brooklyntweed "turn a square" hat. Love it! Thank you for sharing!
Just bought the yarn yesterday to knit one for my camino walk in September.
