Hi all,

I’m flying into Bilbao around 5pm so will stay overnight and the start the walk from there the next morning. Where is the best location to stay for Camino walking convenience?

The last time I had plans to travel from Bilbao I was going to stay in Seminario because it is not far from the airport and looks like it supports backpackers and bikers. I know nothing about it but after numerous stays at the Holiday Inn and Hotel New Bilbao Airport for early morning flights, I was very disappointed with the dining options. The Camino runs along the river so anything east of town is a good option as well.

Is your plan to skip visiting Bilbao? Or do you want to stay in the city and walk from there? Walking out of Bilbao is not great, so you may want to stay near the airport and simply start from there to Portugalette. You’d miss a great city, but it’s an option

Until last year I always stayed in the pilgrim albergue run by the Basque Camino association that is out of town but on the Camino if you take the route out of Bilbao that does not follow the river.

Last year all the pilgrim albergues were closed and since I decided to take the river route this time around I stayed in the Bilbao Metropolitan Hostel which is the old town and a 15 minute walk to the Camino. I'll be staying there again this summer when I start the Olvidado.

When I flew to Bilbao last autumn I stayed in a Pod hostel with albergue type facilites. I met pilgrims walking the Norte who were also staying there. I was very impressed with this place; downtown enough for an evening wander around central Bilbao and very quiet and comfortable at night. I took a bus to Logroño the next morning to join the CF (the bus station is nearby). I don't know how close it is to the Norte.

In 2017 I stayed at the Poshtel Hostel, a block or two from the Guggenheim. A posh albergue. Bilbao is a wonderful city. But just walk all the way around the Guggenheim and look in awe at titanium. I have walked to Portugalete on both sides of the river. Then I took my son on the Metro from Old Town to Portugalete and recommend this. Then you can take the iron bridge swinging car over the river and on to the Camino. Buen Camino IMG-1298.JPG

Bilbao, one of northern Spain’s great cities, worth a day or two of anyone's time. Plenty of accommodation, take the airport bus in to the city for a € or 2, stay central or casco viejo and enjoy.

Hi CarolamS, thank you for this info. I have a question, at the Pod Hostel, do the individual capsules have a 'door'? I would like to know how to leave my backpack securely while taking a walk to the old town. Thanks!

Yes it does but you are given a large locker for your pack in the room just before the room with the sleeping pods. The sleeping room is very quiet.

Thank you CarolamS, the hostel concept is very modern so I thought I would give it a try. I am going to Bilbao after I walk my camino, I thought this would be fun. Thanks again!
