Landmark walking

My son trains runners for the Boston Marathon and 'lent' me this piece of advice.

While you are out training, take note of the landmarks and make a mental note of how far into your walk that landmark appeared. ie: I walk 3K before coming upon a Dunkin Donuts Coffee Shop. Because I walk this route often, it becomes planted in my memory and I can get the actual feel for how far 3K is when thinking back to walking to the coffee shop. On the camino, I was able to assess distances by thinking "Oh I can walk easily to Dunkin Donuts from here". Or, I feel I can walk to Dunkin Donuts and back...It's a way of making a reference to distance by remembering the experience of walking there repeatedly. You get a "feel" for the distance. Often it helps you plug on... !

( similar to telling a child " two more wake-ups then we'll go to....... " , to asses time )
