Late afternoon too late depart for Honto

Hi all
Going on first camino with a friend end of the month. I only have a few weeks to spare so want to get started as soon as I get to SJPP. We arrive in sjpp about 1800 have to get our credencial from the tourist office and was hoping to leave immediately. I thought we might be able to get to honto in an hour or so, assuming we leave sjpp by around 1900? Is this realistic or foolish? Thanks for the feedback.

About 5.5km with near 25om elevation gain. Maybe this helps for you to consider whether easy or difficult. Of course easier with good weather. Do not see any problems which could limit you.

You already have reservation at Huntto?

What a great way to stretch the legs for a bit after arrival.

Getting to Ho(u)nto in an hour is a bit optimistic. You can make it in daylight, though. Sunset is about 2148. The dinner hour will be over, so take food. They have a kitchen in the gite.

Take note that the Office de Tourisme and the "Accueil" or Pilgrim's bureau are two different places in SJPP.
Maybe you can cut some time off by getting your credential in advance. There are some national options, depending of your country, and I believe you can get it here, http://www.santiagodecompostela.me/...passport-from-the-pilgrims-office-in-santiago
On the other side, SJJP is a lovely litte city....it would be a pity to bypass it. Oh, decisions, decisions...

Thanks for that Felipe, I would have gone to the wrong office!
I did not consider getting a credential in advance, but wont I be getting it stamped in SJPP ?
If not you are right I could save time by getting in advance stocking up on feed and hitting the road.
About 3 weeks to go, very exciting!!

Your flight is delayed, the particular train is canceled, there is an accident on the highway and the bus can't get through-and SJPD is a lovely place - run down the Camino as soon as you arrive IF you must, however, in my opinion, you are starting your Camino on the wrong foot. In almost every place you will be lodging, in many many places you will be passing through, down every side road, country lane, and off Camino monastery there are beautiful surprises, treasures of art and architecture, spiritual experiences, and surprising history waiting for you to come in order to be revealed. Santiago is within your grasp, Fistera too should you decide to mush on, but the Camino is much much more than 850 kilometers to be passed to reach what you think might be your goal. The Camino can be walked as a marathon but please don't.

Like you, I hurried on to Honto on my first day on the Camino Frances. However, 1) I'd already explored St Jean Pied de Port on a previous visit, and 2) I set off mid-afternoon, just after lunch. It's only a few kilometres but it's a relentless climb uphill, and then you'd arrive late, have to prepare your own dinner, then bunk down in your bed knowing you'd shaved off 5km from the next day's hike but at the expense of enjoying all StJPdeP has to offer. In that case it's just not worth the head start. Presumably your next stop would be Roncesvalles anyway, so you won't have 'saved' a day by skipping StJPdeP. Consider starting more slowly and speeding up once you're past the mountains

I have visited SJPP previously so I won't miss much by setting off immediately.
I will discuss with my walking buddy though your advice as it is certainly worth considering.
we really arent attempting to walk the camino as a marathon though and in fact dont want have set stages per day rather take it as it comes.
We just want to get started and maybe make the climb to Roncesvalles a little easier by shaving off a little day 1

It takes about the same amount of time to buy a credential at the Pilgrim Office as it does to get it stamped at the Pilgrim Office. You can make up the time by drinking while walking rather than stopping to drink.

Every time I return to a place I've been before I find something "new"! Even if your Camino isn't a marathon, let your body get the message as well.
