Église St-Jean-de-Balerme (near Montpezat d'Agenais) is a rather beautiful romanesque church dating from 11th to 15th centuries. Pilgrims sometimes passed by there, long ago, wishing to avoid the twists and turns in the hills above Le Lot (today's GR 654-East: Castelmoron - Clairac - Aiguillon). They would sometimes ford the river, be ferried across, or traverse the bridge at Villeneuve-sur-Lot where there was an abbey. On this side of Le Lot there were places where a pilgrim might seek shelter: monasteries eg. Sainte Livrade-sur-Lot (Benedictine), Knight's Templars at Le Temple-sur- Lot, Benedictine priories and other religious houses.

Here is a selection of photos, contacts and information which I have put together for those interested in making a detour: Resource: Église St-Jean-de-Balerme (login to download)
