I like to spend one night in Paris.
I then take the direct 7.30am-ish TGV Train from Gare Montparnasse to Bayonne.
There is usually a suitable 2nd class discounted seat available for 35-40 Euros.
It's a relaxing 5hr journey thru the beautiful French countryside.
From Bayonne station a train leaves for SJPdP. It waits til the train from Paris arrives.
So, first find out the timetable of the Bayonne to St Jean train, then ensure your train from Paris arrives at a suitable time to catch the one to St Jean.
I use www.capitaintrain.com to purchase the ticket on line. Tickets are available and cheapest from 90 days in advance of the date of travel.
September is a great time to commence walking.
The nervous excited apprehension is quite normal.
You will be just fine.
Regards and Buen Camino

Hi Sandra, I arrive in Paris on Sept 5, leaving on train for St Jean on the 7th. I paid 42 euro going to St Jean, but 79 returning from St Jean on Oct 22 on the sncf website. Probably just me but, I fussed with the reservations for a whole weekend while wishing I had let my travel agent book for me. When will you arrive in Paris? Buen Camino, Shelly

I am taking a plane from Paris to Biaritz on september 6th and being meet by express Bourricot in the evening for a trip to a hotel near SJPdP
Nanc

Nanc, that sounds great! Wish I had investigated that option before Booking non-refundable trains & Paris hotels. We likely will not run into each other as you are a bit ahead, and I expect to bring up the rear each day possibly not keeping up with the stages. Buen Camino to you! Shelly

2152 Executive Summary

There are at least two viable options for getting from Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) airport to Saint Jean Pied de Port (SJPdP):

a. Fly from Paris to Biarritz and take the train from Bayonne to SJPdP.

b. Take the train from Paris to Bayonne and transfer to another train from Bayonne to SJPdP. Stations in Paris with trains to Bayonne include: CDG 2, Gare d'Austerlitz, Gare Montparnasse, and Gare Massy.

Note: The tracks between Bayonne and SJPdP got washed out in Spring 2014 and repaired in November 2015.

2153 ~Option 1 Fly from Paris to Biarritz and train to SJPdP

a. Fly from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) to Biarritz Airport (BIQ). Air France and Easy Jet provides service; or,

b. Fly from Paris Orly Airport (ORY) to Biarritz Airport (BIQ) Air France provides service.

The Chronoplus urban bus #14 leaves from the doors of Biarritz Airport and goes to Gare de Bayonne. Allow 40 minutes.

The SNCF TER train #62 travels from Bayonne to terminus at SJPdP. Sometimes the train goes from Bayonne to Cambo les Bains. Passengers to SJPdP then transfer to an SNCF operated bus at Cambo les Bains. Sometimes the entire route is serviced by a bus.

2154 ~Option 2 - Train from Paris to SJPdP

TGV trains travel towards Bayonne from three train stations in Paris:

a. There is a TGV station located at Charles de Gaulle Airport Terminal 2.

b. There is a TGV station located at Gare Montparnasse in central Paris. There is greater frequency of service from Gare Montparnasse than from CDG 2.

c. TGV trains from CDG 2 stop at Gare Massy.

SNCF TGV trains leave from Paris enroute to Bordeaux or Irun. Often there is a transfer required at Bordeaux. TGV trains from Bordeaux terminate in Irun. TER trains from Bordeaux terminate in Pau or Hendaye. If your train is bound for Pau another transfer is required at Dax. Trains bound for Hendaye or Irun stop in Bayonne.

SNCF Intercites night trains travel from Paris Gare d'Austerlitz to Hendaye and stop in Bayonne.

SNCF TER train #62 travels from Gare Bayonne to terminus at SJPdP. Sometimes the train goes from Bayonne to Cambo les Bains. Passengers to SJPdP then transfer to an SNCF operated bus at Cambo les Bains. Sometimes the entire route is serviced by a bus.

You will get limited results if you try to find a schedule for a train from Paris to SJPdP. I'd suggest planning your trip from Paris to Bayonne then Bayonne to SJPdP.

If I were traveling to SJPdP by way of Paris I would:

a. Determine if it was cost effective and time effective to fly from Paris to Biarritz. Time effective means arriving in time to catch a train from Bayonne to SJPdP on the same day.

b. If arriving at CDG and taking the train is the better option ... take the train from CDG 2 if the schedule is viable.

c. If CDG 2 schedule doesn't work ... Take RER B train to St Michel and transfer to the Metro. Take the line 4 Metro to Montparnasse. Then board the TGV train originating from Montparnasse. There is more frequent service from Montparnasse.

d. If arriving at Orly ... take the Orly Val to station Antony and RER train to Massy.

I will be arriving in Paris in early September. Is there anyone else travelling to St. Jean Port du Pied? Any tips as to best routes. I am feeling a little overwhelmed!! I would greatly appreciate any information.
Hi Sandra. I am catching a plane from CDG to Biarritz on morning of 6th. Then a quick bus to Bayonne train station. Finally the train to St Jean. Of course a personal choice - I will be tired after 31 hour journey to Paris so opted for less connections and less chance of falling asleep when I do not want to sleep.

What should you do? I think the answer depends on your situation and confidence around making connections etc.

Your first choice after arriving in Paris is plane or train - ignoring go to a hotel to stay first night in Paris! The rest of this assumes you are arriving at Charles De Gaulle Airport

Train:
The Intercity train from CDG takes a while (maybe good maybe bad?) and more expensive but you don't have to worry about negotiating Paris Metro etc.
You can get the Metro from CDG to Gare Montparnasse and then Intercity train to Bayonne. The disadvantage is often the worry about getting to the train in time at Gare Montparnasse.
Plane:
As mentioned a couple of airlines fly from CDG to Biarritz which is a short bus trip from Bayonne. Advantage is easier connection as you are probably only changing terminals at CDG . Disadvantages usually more expensive and you do have to think about making sure you have enough time to make connection.

Second choice is how to get from Bairritz (Bayonne) to St Jean. Two choices:
One:
I can see Nanc has booked a taxi service. You'll find many references to that on this forum.
Two:
Catch airport bus to Bayonne Station .. easy as it is last stop. Then catch train to St Jean. My guess is that there will be many other pilgrims on these so no worries about getting lost.

I can give you more details and links etc if you wish.

Thank you Shelley. I am in the process of booking from Canada. I thinking of arriving in Paris on the morning of the 7th. I debating between flying to Biarritz or taking the train.
