Horse Sense

You can let the horse do the walking, but make sure your body is prepared to ride a horse for an extended period of time.

Horseback riding uses a whole bunch of muscles that you do not use in everyday life. While you might not get blisters, there's a reason why we use the term "saddlesore".

I was in a room over a cafe/bar in Saria in May of this year.I looked out of the window when I heard the noise of horses outside. The horses were climbing a long and very steep set of steps in the rain and they were having a difficult time doing so.They then had to slither and slide a further 150 metres or so along a very muddy stretch of road that had been dug up to allow resurfacing work to be done.
The next time I saw this group of eight horses was the next morning as they were being ridden along the very busy main street of Saria. The large lorries and other traffic must have been horrible for the horses and riders both.
Much to my surprise that evening I was sat with a group of other pilgrims outside an albergue at Ligonde-Eirexe when the group of horses arrived to the village looking for a place to stay.I had arrived on foot about two hours before the riders and was already showered and changed ready for my evening meal.
I can appreciate that the idea of riding a horse is good but the reality as far as I witnessed does not meet the fantasy.I am sure that some stretches must be fabulous for riding. However there are stretches where riding must be verging on cruelty and downright dangerous, such as riding in heavy traffic. Also as I experienced, riding doesn't necessarily save time.
