Hola
Day 0 , not a good start. Yesterday with a SMS Rayanair tells me that my flight to Valencia has been cancelled. They will give me the money back but that is all. This is how they make business in this days.
So different plan. This morning I had to go to a different airport fly to Madrid take one train to Porta Atocha and take the high speed train to Valencia. I lost the train I booked and I had to pay extra for the next. Finally I got to the Hostel, they gave me the credential mailed me by Ivar, run to the cathedral to get it stamped and then walk to Decathlon for the stiks.
Now I'm sitting in a nice restaurant waiting for my paella.
In the old days pilgrims got robbed on the way to Santiago, today I got robbed by Ryanair, so things didn't change a lot.

Hola to everyone.

It sounds like you have coped well, and at least the day is ending on a good note. Let us know how you are getting along as you progress. I am interested in this route at some point in the next few years. Buen Camino!

ah, all that bad stuff will fade from memory as soon as you start to walk! Buen camino, Brandy, really looking forward to hearing how things go for you. Can't believe we are so lucky to have TWO current Levante pilgrims writing on the forum.

If you're a paella fan, go to the Casino restaurant in Algemesi and see if they are making one that day. It was very yummy!

Hi @Brandy and welcome to the Levante fan club. I'll be following you in 2 months. Eagerly awaiting your tips.
By the way, where have you chosen to stay in Valencia? Are you buying the English guidebook from the association? Cheers

Hi Brandy ....unfortunately the French air traffic controllers strike seems to be the problem... N.B this could effect flights passing through their airspace this week

Hallo Grace
In Valencia, since I'm alone I booked a Youth hostel, via Booking.com. I believe there are many places for all the tastes....
I don't buy guidebooks any longer, after my Frances and the la Plata. I normally get all the information online and then I put myself in the walk and see mode.
When I walk I don't go for touristic surrounding places. Not even restaurants, I go around and if I like something I stay...
In the old days pilgrims went from village to village and slept most probably on the floor in churches. So if I stop in a place I'll try to go and see the main church.
For all the fancy places you can find in guide books I just don't have time.

Cheers

Hola
Day one
Valencia Algemesi.
Not very much to say. 90% asphalt, flat, first two hours terrible traffic noise (it was 6.30 in the morning) no shade, no pilgrim. Many places where you can stop and have coffee ,you go from village to village.
For the rest I have to confess my sins: I took oranges from the tree on the way to Algemesi.

Hola Daniel.
I do understand problems Ryanair may have. I don't like the fact that in this case all they care about is to give you the money back. When I plan a trip, many other activities are involved. It is not just the money I loose, It is also the fact that I'm not in Valencia on a certain day. They should offer similar trips in the next day or things like that. And they don't.

Cheers

Brandy

Yes the Albergue in Algemesi.
I called yesterday saying I'll be there by 5. I arrived at 4 nobody was there untill 515, got the key by 530 . Albergue very basic. ( donativo). Near the musem de la fiesta . The people working at the museum will give you the key

You're right Laurie.
Now I don't think about yesterday anymore. It's gone.
The pleasure of walking is much stronger.
The Casino today doesn't offer paella.
Maybe tomorrow.

So I take it you are in Algemesi. Is the folklore museum open for you to have a distraction for a short while? Are you in the albergue? How was your walk today? Yes, I know, I am annoying with all my questions, but curious minds want to know the details! :D

Wow, 38k in one day to Algemesi! You are in the pro league compared to me. I would venture to say I won't even see you as your daily distance covered is twice mine. I definetly wouldn't be able to keep up at my meagre 4kmh either. Good luck!

Hola
Day 2 Algemesi Canals.
Still asphalt but maybe it is saturday so there was not much traffic today.
And I was alble to see nice villages like Alzira and Xativa.
The Albergue in Canals runned by the local Police is very very basic and dirty. I would not recommend it.
Something I have not calculated is the heat. In March I didn't think this may be a
problem but it is. I start walking at 630 but around noon I have to stop often and cool down. Any body coming here in May or June must be ready for some real heat. Hola Pilgr do you have the same teperatures I'm having ?

Cheers

Yes, lots of sunshine! I left at 545am to beat the heat today. But fear not, in two days the forecast is for 170mm and sleet! That should cool us off!

Don't worry about kilometers. Worry about experience. The Camino is not only distance it is also time , time of your life you dedicate to yourself.

Yeah, you are in for some really nasty weather as I see on some web pages.
Take care @pilgr & @Brandy !!!

@Brandy I've just caught up with your thread. I am sorry you had trouble with RyanAir, but your first post did make me laugh. Hope you are enjoying the walk.

Hola Kanga
Yes I'm enjoying the walking, no problem with that. After the first day things went pretty smooth.
For the record this is not the first time Ryanair cancelled on me. Last year in march, at the end of the Mozarabe they cancelled the Siviglia Bergamo I was booked on. They gave me my 60 Euros, I had to take train to Madrid and ticket from Madrid to Bologna. You can imagine the cost of a ticket you buy today for today.
But I'm sincerely happy you laugh about.

to both @Brandy and @pilgr - I am sticking like glue to your posts. I’m following your footsteps in only 10 weeks. All the details on Albergues is going into my ‘homemade’ guidebook. Thanks for posting so regularly. Cheers, Grace

PS - anyone else leaving around 24-25 May?

Hola
Day 3 Canals Font de la Figuera.
Again an early start to avoid the heat.
So by nine I reach Vallada and take some time to visit the nice church.
In Moixent there was a motorbike reunion with hundreds bikes so it was difficult to find a place for lunch. At the end I went to a place called "La pizza" who even had a logbook for pilgrims to sign.
Then to Font de la Figuera: finally a nice track away from careteras going trough cultivated farmland with nice view.
In Font I decided for Hostal Amable wich is very nice ( 38 euro breakfast included) but after the experience in Canals Albergue I needed a change.

Hola
Day 4 Font de la Figuera Almansa.
I have to say the Hostal Amable was very nice and this morning the man that works there and fixed my breakfast, his name is Ramon, when I left he came out with me, in the rain, to make shure I was going in the right direction.
The first 10 km were relatively nice : no wind, light to moderate rain in a nice surrounding.
During the second half the weather was much worst: it was cold, windy and still rainy. Not a funny ride.
For this leg I planned, to make it shorter for weather consideration, to switch from camino de Leavante to the Camino de la Lana de Alicante, which in 2 occasions goes wery near the Levante. This is what I did and I think I really made it shorter. On my GPS to the castillo in Almasa it indicated 26.7 km.
Hola Pilgr can you tell us how many chilometers did you walk during this leg ?
If anyone is interested in the transition from Levante to Lana let me know.

@Brandy, would you kindly pass on brief notes on how to take this route (Lana) from La Font? Is it clearly marked? Cheers

Hola Grace
Lana is a Camino just like Levante, it meets Levante in Almansa and it continues to Alpera. Also it is very well marked with yellow arrows, just like levante. It goes near a road but always on a separated track.
I have attached 3 maps. I hope you can read because writing notes is very complicated.
On map 1 you see the general picture. The red lines are the 2 caminos. Don't consider the pink line this is a motorway. The levante is coming from the right side the Lana from the bottom of the picture. Map 2 is what I did today. The colored track is my track and you can see my going from one to the other camino. Map 3 is the second point where you can switch.
I Hope I helped a bit.

Cheers

What a super detailed reply @Brandy. I don’t know how you get all that technology sorted while on the road.
I’m a bit of a GPS gumby but have managed to download the Levante stage maps to Maps.me on my iphone. I hope that’ll be enough to get back on track if I ever get lost. I’ll print off your ‘Lana’ route as well. Thanks again

It is too difficult to master GPS technology, but it is not necessary. All you need is to get familiar in reading maps and learn what they can do for you.

Day 5 Almansa Alpera
Late start today, so I could check the weather before starting another day. So I started around nine and went to the center to see the castel and the cathedral. After that I started moving to Alpera.
It was a solitary trip, not even rabbits where visible , so windy was it. At end the sun came out and things were better.
Elected to go to the hostal El Cazador.
Alpera seems to be very quiet.

@Brandy, did you get an Orange SIM in Valencia? How’s the signal?
Hola Grace
That was the plan, but since I missed the first train in Madrid, porta Atocha station, I have bought a sim over there. The provider is Lycamobile and I was told it uses the Net from Movil. So far I havent had a place with out voice or data reception. For 10 euros they give you 150 minutes, 1,5 gigabites no SMS. They had other option for higher prices.

Hola
There are reasons. I called 4 times the number posted on the camino de Levante website with no luck and second I was preoccupied with heating the room in the albergue.
The Cazador, where I stopped for lunch upon arrival, gave me all I needed for 20 euro so I stayed.

Day 6 Alpera Hoya Gonzalo
Really few things to talk about. I stayed on the caretera and joined the camino after 11 km. Very windy and clear sky. Had lunch a la Posada in Higueruela where staff is nice. And then continued to Hoya Gonzalo walking near farmland and windmills.
A surprise was the brand new Albergue in Hoya Gonzalo , very clean with automatic air conditioning and heating sitting right on the Camino. (10 euro)

Hola Grace
I Start from the end . On the website ot the amigos del Levante there is the number of Ayuntamento in Hoya Gonzalo , I called them and we met at the albergue to get the keys. As far as my plan goes it is to proceed to Albacete and then to La Roda. I know Chincilla is nice but my stops are not based on tourism. (You may have noticed it). In Albacete I just booked a room in Hotel Cardinal (Albacete Centre) for 29 euros via Booking.com.

Hi, Grace,

I think I posted a few photos in @pilgr Live thread about that albergue in Hoya Gonzalo. I really liked it. Maybe I was so fond of it because of the heat and there was public swimming pool diagonally across the crossroads. I went some 300 meters from it to the village center where Ayuntamiento is to get the keys. And the procedure was the same as in many of Levante albergues/acogidas - leave the keys in a mailbox the morning after.

PS (Did you get my booklet in mail?)

Yes - I have so much info on the Levanye now (before I even pick up the Association book in Valencia). I’ll have to pdf everything and send to myself to save in Kindle ;). Otherwise my pack weight will out-do me ! Thanks again to all in the Levante-fan-club

It was nice to have a bar open at 715 for a coup of coffe in Gonzalo. It was nice the first part to Chinchilla too. Very powerful colors on the ground and in the sky. I took many photos between Gonzalo and Chinchilla.

Day 8 Albacete La Roda
My hotel was near the cathedral so it was easy to find an open bar at 630 in the morning. After that I elected to take il camino Sureste to La Gineta because is it easier to follow and a little bit shorter. After a quick lunch in La Gineta I continued to La Roda calling Antonio , the man that takes care of the Albergue in La Roda.
We met at the plaza de toros where I learned that there were 3 more German pilgrim. So the place left for me was in the kitchen. The Albergue is less than basic, But Antonio is very nice.
Speaking about albergue the germans told me they slept in La Gineta where after long waiting and discussion they were presented with a substandard polideportivo place they said can not be called Albergue.
I hope it will not be too cold tonight.

Yesterday when i got back to the Albergue there was another pilgrim in "kitchen" a spanish biker who slept on the floor.
When I left this morning I was quite happy. Albergue in La Roda is substandard too. Arrived in San Clemente and went to a hostal this time to recover. Hostal La Plaza right on Plaza Mayor, the center of San Clemente. 20 euro for pilgrim.

Day 11 Mota del Cuervo Villa de dom Fedrigue
I live early the nice Hostal in Mota headed to El Toboso full of Don Quijote references. After el Toboso I prefer to take Sureste that goes directly to La Puebla de Almoradiel without passing trough Quintanar de la Orden. After lunch I continue to Villa de dom Fedrigue.
Now according to the information I have collected there is an Albergue in Villa de dom Fedrigue. But no it is a polideportivo. So there was a little surprise there.
Best place for dinner is the rest. Deportivo that is on the main caretera.

I remember the walk to Mora -- you could see the castle of Almonacid off in the distance for hours, but at some point you turned left and stopped advancing towards it. Then, the next day, you headed back towards it till you finally circled it. I felt like Sisyphus pushing that boulder up only to have it come right back down again. Oh, but the day after, the walk into Toledo -- that more than made up for the day before, the moment when you first see the El Greco view of Toledo it just takes your breath away! Buen camino, Brandy!

Wow, I just realised (Laurie reminded me of that) that you're almost in Toledo!!! ;)
Remember that day very well as I came to the albergue half dead because of the heat, with empty phone battery, obviously missed the left turn (only guessing, hahaha) after Nambroca and walked through Las Nieves to Toledo on the autopista. I needed three Coca-Colas to get myself together on that day.

Forum member @roberbolo lives in Toledo but haven't seen a post from him for quite a while now.

EDIT: I checked out and he was last seen today at 1:43PM, that means he's still active.

Not a bad walk from Tembleque to Mora, no villages in between and away from the caretera. It was windy and cold. In Mora I opted for Hostal Agripino in the center. (25 €).

Buen Camino

Hola
Day 14 Mora Toledo
Nice day clear sky and a temperature of-1 , says my app. When going to Mascaraque I can see the castel near Almonacid deToledo red against the blue sky . But approaching Nanbroca the weather changed into snow. I made it to Burquillos de Toledo for lunch just to see from the window of the dining room a good half an hour of moderate snow. Then it stopped so I started preparing to move. I had 14 km more to go but looking to my smartphone gps map I was only at 7,5 km from the Alcantara bridge ( line of sight ). So from that point , to minimize the risk of bad weather, I decided to disregard the camino track and to walk north in the direction of Toledo. At the Alcantara bridge I had 36 km on my gps, so it should be 3 km shorter starting from Mora.
My accomodation at the Oasis Hostel in the center of Toledo. Nice and clean.
I'll post the map with the deviation on the next post.

Buen Camino

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Hola
On the previous post the colored line is the camino, the red line my track. It is a very safe track and it gives you the opportunity to see the city from a very high stand poing where the camino stays lower.
Anybody interested in the gpx just let mi know.

Cheers

Hola
Day 15 Toledo Torrijos

A very quiet and nice walk on a Saturday morning in foggy weather and a temperature of 0°.
Very little to say exept the fact that the police and Ayuntamento staff in Torrijos are very nice and that the Albergue is pretty decent and confortable.

Buen Camino

Brandy, you’re a star! I’ve added your deviation to my maps.me by saving ‘bookmarks’ along your route based on the map you posted above. Very helpful. Thanks (I believe maps.me only uses kml or kmz files. I’ve not worked out how to load gpx files to it.

Hola
Day 16 Torrijos Almorox.
Expecting rain, it didn't rain so I was dry, but still quite muddy in certain places. I met in Escalona 3 spanish pilgrims on Sureste. They were using the Albergue in that village. After Escalona the Camino was nicer, not so flat anymore....will see in the next days.
In Almorox I stay at the Posada Bemi which is on the caretera (and on the camino) 30 € per night.

Buen Camino

I'm not familiar with maps.me and I don't understand how You can add a deviation without a file. Anyway if you need a kml of my track that day, I can give it to you.

Hola
Day 17 Almorox Cebreros
I left Posada Bemi it was still dark, it was not raining , it was a light drizzle and it lasted for 3 4 hours. So climbing the nice hills was in a misty weather with a general visibility of about 1000 meters or less. Another point to mention is the lack of yellow arrows untill San Martin de Valdeiglesias. This can be tricky sometimes in particular for those peregrinos who relay on yellow arrows. After you leave San Martin and enter Castilla Leon indications are much more accurate.
In Cebreros I stay in the albergue Pizarra.

Buen Camino

Hola

Day 18 Cebreros Avila

Finally a nice day. Fresh in the morning so it was easy to climb the 300 meters on top of Cebreros from where it was possible to watch a magnificent sunrise. And then staying high crossing fincas with cows to San Bartolomé and then to El Herradon. In this two villages bars exist but are often closed at least around 11 when I got there.
After El Herradon another climb to another pass and then a slow and long descent in to Avila.
My choice for hostal was the nice Vintage hostal at 150 meters from the Cathedral and on the camino, 27 € per night via Booking.com.
This is my last day on the Camino , I was planning to go a little bit longer ( maybe Tordesillas on the Sureste) but for various reasons I could not make it. Thursday the 30th I have a plane from Madrid flying me back to Verona, Italy.
In September I'll be back and starting from Avila continue on Sureste, Madrid, Francese, San Salvador and Primitivo to Santiago.
In the meantime thank you for your support and for those on the Levante a wish of
Buen Camino.

Hola
I'm showing the place where also Sue got confused.
The colored line is the published kml by the amigos and the blue line is my path.
At a certain points the two lines separate. But in that position there is nothing, no road that goes to the right just trees. So I continued and turned left on the next intersection. There are no yellow arrows indicating a left turn.
So be carefull

Brandy

Glad you got to experience some of that beautiful mountain scenery in good weather. It was really one of my favorite parts of the Levante. So sorry to see it come to an end, Brandy, thanks for bringing us along. Avila is a good place to start back up again! I'll be looking forward to September trip. Safe journey home, Laurie

@Brandy, is that the Almorox to San Martin problem ? Do you have a kml file ?
Hola
The kml files of the levate can all be downloaded from the website of the Amigos.
Yes it is the Almorox to San Martin track.

Cheers

@gracethepilgrim

The kml files already out there are fine. What happens on the Camino is that you look to take a trail and you find nothing. As Brandy says, it is just a bunch of trees and bushes. But no worries. If you simply continue on the road you ALREADY are walking, you will run into the Camino again in several hundred meters. It will make sense when you are there looking at the kml files and map.

Brilliant - I’m all set then. Thanks for the explanation. It will help all of us 2017 Levante-ists
