I was recommended this site by a fellow member who I met on the Camino. I was on the Camino last year (2007) in September and October and happened to fall in love with the owner of one of the albergues in Lorca (Albergue de Lorca Jose Ramon) and have now been here for 3 months playing voluntario/hospitalero and am so happy that my Camino has carried on beyond Santiago. For those of you that have started in St. Jean, Roncesvalles, Pamplona, etc. then you have passed by this little town, population 130. Most people do the Puente de la Reina to Estella phase, but some decide to stay here in Lorca because of blisters, heat, exhaustion or just because they find Lorca a charming place. I am currently a licensed nurse and have also worked as cook and so these occupations come in handy as voluntario. Mostly I am just so happy to be in a place in my life where I can continue to help pilgrims on their way, sometimes by feeding them, sometimes by giving words of encouragement.
I don't know why but when I was doing my research for the Camino for some reason I saw few pictures of what typical albergues look like, if there is such a thing as a typical albergue since they vary in size and personality (and cleanliness and facilities). Anyway, we have a small website that I put together if this would be a help for someone since there are photos of the rooms. It is http://www.alberguedelorca.com. As someone who has walked and also as someone who is still literally on the Camino everyday, I would love to be of service if I can, so please feel free to write me/respond. And please come see us in Lorca and say hello. I often joke and say that I fell in love with Jose Ramon for two reasons...because I had to go the bathroom so badly that day and he had a nice clean bathroom and also for his cafe con leche. For those of you that have done the Camino, then you know how those are two lifesavers sometimes, bathroom first then cafe con leche.
Buen Camino!
