Lodging in SJPP + initial stages?

I am about to begin CF on, admittedly, not having planned it out that much. I'm sorted on gear thankfully.

One piece of advice I was read (don't recall where) said to reserve lodging in SJPP and the initial stages in advance. Is this the case? If so, how does one go about reserving them? I thought all the albergues were first come first serve.

First come - first served applies only to a limited range of accommodations, most of which have reported plenty of space as the drive appears to have been to reserve private rooms. You are setting out in-between the May surge and the summer holiday season. You may find reservations un-necessary.

i personally would always reserve in Saint Jean and Roncesvalles. Reserving gives you the opportunity to experience the albergue Beilari in Saint jean. Highly recommended.

When arriving in SJPdP do plan to visit the Pilgrim Office located on the camino at 39 rue de La Citadelle and run by les Amis du chemin de Saint Jacques.

The office is open every day and in season from early in the morning until late at night ie after the arrival of the last bus/train.

The helpful multi-lingual volunteers can provide you with a Credential if needed, as well as a list of major albergues and current weather/ trail conditions. They can also help locate a bed/bunk for the night if you arrive without a reservation.

Most importantly the office is a great spot to meet/ greet other pilgrims. ...Do plan to stop and chat!

I would recommend booking in St J P de P,Orisson and Roncesvalles.
I booked last November for our Camino which begins next week!

I'm currently in SJPP, about to start my walk. Yesterday when looking around the town I noticed that many private albergues had a "complet" note on their door in the afternoon. Many people checking in at the Pilgrim's Office as well, so it seems pretty busy to me (but since this is my first camino, I don't have any comparison).
