Time of past OR future Camino
Le Puy to Santiago de Compostela in summer 2014 (Late June- early July)
Hello! The heading says it all.. I have decided to do the Camino this summer 2014 and still can't seem to find a reasonable way to travel? Wanted to get some advise from someone that have traveled from UK (London area) before and would help me. I am on low budget, taking a tent with me so will not be staying at hostels and will be camping out outside every night to avoid bed bugs, long ques and snoring fellow pilgrims :)
I thought of an idea of flying to Lyon which would be about £30 then taking a train to Le Puy but not so keen on the luggage restrictions so maybe train? Please help I have aprx 6-8 weeks to plan ahead!

Thank you!!!!

Eurostar trains operate between London St Pancras International Station and Paris Gare du Nord.

SNCF trains operate between Paris Gare de Lyon or Paris Gare Bercy and Le Puy en Velay

Use Paris Transit Network to travel from Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon or Bercy.

As I read your post its clear the problem isn't with the flight ... its with the amount of luggage you want to carry and the desire to avoid paying for checking said baggage. You won't get around the cost by taking the trains described here.

You will not find long queues on the Le Puy. Or any queues for that matter. It is nothing like the Camino Frances. Camping may not be an available option - I would get further advice.

Join our full-service guided tour of the Basque Country and let us pamper you!
Flying may be your best option. A £30 flight plus luggage checking-in fees is still cheaper than the train, which will cost at least £100 as far as Le Puy, even with advance deals

Hey!Thank you for the advice! Yes I have done some research and have found out that I will be able to camp outside with promotion. I sure hope so that I will be able to do so as I know that France is more expensive than Spain.. and I am on a low budget. But hey that is what being a true pilgrim is all about :)

I'm flying to Lyon mid June and am struggling with the logistics of the train journey to Le Puy. I know there is one, but when? From where? Help?

Thank you!

The routes are --

LYON PART DIEU railroad station
to either
SAINT ETIENNE CHATEAUCREUX or to FIRMINY

and then
by railroad supplied bus/autocar
to LE PUY EN VELAY

See VOYAGES-SNCF for schedules. What exact date will you travel?

Bon voyage and Buen Camino,

Margaret Meredith

I had the same question about the train journey from Lyon to Le Puy! Thank you for clearing that out!

Safe walk!

Hi
I am flying into lyon st exupery on sept 1st arriving at 15.05 and looking at trains I will arrive at 18.48 in le Puy. This is fairly late in the evening. Is there any hackney car hire like burricot in SJPDP?
I looked at taxi prices and they quoted €240 which is just a tad too pricey!!
Any suggestions?

Lyon is a great town; why not stay overnight? Although, if you decide to go straight to Le Puy it is not really late. We've stayed at the Etab (now Ibis budget) hotel directly opposite the Le Puy railway station and it was fine.

Thank you so much. I fly 21st June, and its still showing nothing at all, so I guess I'll just have to wing it when I get there. Is the station in the airport? I fly to St Expury, in case there's more than one!

Lyon Airport (LYS)

Best way to get to Gare Part Dieu is Rhone Express Tram

Rhone Express
http://www.rhonexpress.fr/

Lyon transit
http://www.tcl.fr/

There is a TGV station at the Airport however, trains from LYS to Le Puy indicate 8 hour passage by way of Paris ... so you're better off going to Lyon Gare Part Dieu.

I've (finally!) managed to persuade the website to give me the info. But... it looks like an hour on a train then two on a bus, with the first service leaving three hours after my flight lands.

Which just seems a bonkers way to waste a day. (Seriously, London to Lyon is both quicker and cheaper than Lyon to Le Puy.)

So.... does anyone know of an express bouricout type service? Or is anyone on the easyjet flight landing Saturday at 2pm who wants to share a cab?

Cheers!

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.

I could tell you about my second trip to Spain where the plane left London three hours late.

Three hours is not a lot of time to land, get through customs, get oriented, and travel from the airport to the train station. If you find you have time to waste, count yourself lucky because its a lot better than stressing out about making the last train on time.

Three hours from Lyon to Le Puy isn't bad either considering it is 110 km. Consider that it beats walking. Perhaps you might start your camino in Lyon.

Bring a book.

That's teh other worry - if I miss that train, I'm stuffed. Which again pushes me towards a transfer, if there is one available.

I will now be travelling with 3 people I met last year. We have a taxi booked from the airport to Le Puy for €180. Travelling in style to our destination! The real advantage is arriving two hours earlier than the trail and having time to get our bearings.
