Via Gebennensis (2018)
Via Podiensis (2018)
Voie Nive Bidassoa (2018)
Camino Del Norte (2018)
We're walking from Switzerland to Santiago de Compostela. Our original plan was to walk along the via Gebennensis to Le Puy, then from Le Puy to Arthez-de-Béarn on the via Podiensis, and from there cut across to Bayonne via Orthez and Peyrhorade. Then from Bayonne we would follow the coast to Irun and join the Camino del Norte.
The bit between Arthez-de-Béarn to Bayonne proved too hard to plan: not enough gîtes, walking on main roads, etc. So we decided to follow the Podiensis all the way to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.
We will then take the train/bus/Blablacar to Bayonne from SJPDP.
Unfortunately, as a result of the stages we are planning, and because we cannot walk long stages, we will not be able to stay in SJPDP, which is what the Miam Miam Dodo calls "un crime de lèse-majesté" . :)
As we intend to arrive by 10am in SJPDP, and take the 4:31pm train to Bayonne, we will still be able to discover and enjoy this beautiful town. But we don't want to carry our backpacks all day long.
So after this long preamble :), is there somewhere in SJPDP where we can safely and securely leave our backpacks for the day?
Apologies for such a long post ;)
Bon chemin!

New Original Camino Gear Designed Especially with The Modern Peregrino In Mind!
Ask at the Pilgrim Office, run by the Amis du Chemin de Saint-Jacques at 39 rue de La Citadelle. In the past one could store bags and even bikes without any problem.

Good luck and Buen camino!

Hi, AJG,

It is a long way you are planing to walk and that's why I'm asking myself why would you take a train in the middle of it.
Why not walk Voie de la Nive (SJPdP-Bayonne: http://vppyr.free.fr/pages_transversales/voie_nive/vnive.php?etp=accueil) or Camino de Baztan (Pamplona-Bayonne: https://www.gronze.com/camino-baztan) in reverse?

Anyway Bon chemin & Buen Camino!

Well, initially, @KinkyOne, we were going to walk all the way and not take a train :). The only issue is that the planning of the bit between Arthez-de-Béarn and Bayonne turned out to be harder than I had expected. And by that time, I had already planned the Camino del Norte. For a number of reasons (life is not always simple), we have to plan short stages, and as a result book accommodation. So this means that by walking down to SJPDP we don't have the time to walk the Voie de la Nive back to Bayonne.
However, you have given me ideas, and I am considering the Voie de la Nive - Bidassoa.
Thank you!

@KinkyOne, you're right, one would ask why we would take a train in the middle of our long walk.
So I researched a bit, and found the "Voie Nive - Bidassoa". Finding accommodation is not as easy as on the via Podiensis, but we have worked out something.
Our last night before SJPDP is in Bussunarits, so the next day we'll walk from there through SJPDP (with the appropriate time to visit the town) through to Urdoz (about 7km before Bidarray). Stage 2 is from Urdoz to Itxassou. Stage 3 is Itxassou to Ascain. Stage 4 is Ascain to Irun.
An average of 20km a day, which is a little bit more than we like to walk. We won't go through Bayonne, but that can be done another time!
If the accommodation falls through (because there's not much of it around), then we will unfortunately have to resort to a train to Bayonne...
So thank you for motivating me!
Cheers
Andrew

Hi,
Buen Camino

Hi, i should really stop looking at different camino's. I want to do them all.
Now you've interested me in the Camino de Baztan. From the little maps on gronze i can see it follows a couple of rivers. Do you know if the way is well marked when not following the rivers?

I didn't walk Baztan but remember reading thread from last year. You can find this one (first pinned) and rest of them in this section:

Happy planing :)
