Hi all,

I'm curious to know what the luggage transport service is like on this route.

How much does it cost?
Is it reliable?

Pack walks seem to aggreviate the tendonitis in my foot. More likely than not I'll need to utilize this service.

Would love to hear your experiences/recommendations.

As I recall, there is luggage transfer available along the entire route from Le Puy to SJPP; details are in the MMD. This is not one vendor however; at least three different companies, each providing service over a section. Your gite host will call and make the arrangement if you ask; given the regional French accents in the area, this is advisable (although I did manage to communicate in my first year walk when making my own arrangement, in my perfectly awful French). The cost was 7 euros, and they take both bags and walkers.

I am more concerned about your tendonitis; have you consulted a podiatrist (foot specialist)? I truly wish I had these custom orthotics before the trip, rather than agonizing through the entire walk first.

I also did not see any pilgrims whaling without packs.
Probably a low key thing on the Le Puy route.

Gray, I respect your observations of your own experience. My experience was that I saw adverts (frequently on gite bulletin boards, and occasionally at crossroads), and I saw fellow French walkers receiving the sent-ahead luggage (they usually did walk with small, light daybags for lunch etc), and I myself used the transfer service on two different occasions, in two different years, on two different sections of the route. Also MMD does list several firms. Remember, I was walking in September. Perhaps things are different in the winter season (if you've just finished walking recently.)

Actually, I walked April 1 arriving SJPdP on May 1st 2012.
It is interesting how our experiences differ. I do not recall any sign of baggage transfer but obviously it exists.
I was just reporting my observations. It could be the time of the year or the number of pilgrims on the road.

It does exist. When I stayed with my friends in their gite in Moissac there were bags delivered ahead of the arrival of pilgrims pretty much every day. I've forgotten the name of the main company doing it now, but could find out if you wanted.

Every night when you come into your alburghee,there is always an assortment of backpacks near the door, Jacotrans,will pick up every morning and take them to wherever you need them. Your host will arrange it every morning. The cheapest was 3 euros,the most was 11 .The closer you get to Santiago,the cheaper,it became. Very reliable, never had any problems, we would reserve a bed and then have them delivered to that alburhgee or hostel. Was amazing to not have to carry the packs as some of the people we were with,clearly over packed. And it slowed us down. Once we heard about Jacotrans,the trip went much smoother.

We use JACOTRANS.com. Very reliable. About 7€ per bag depending on the distance

In September 2013 in SJPP the Pilgrim Office was a pickup point for Express Bourricot who delivered my bag to Orisson and Roncesvalles. The next day Carlos y Xabi delivered my bag to Zubiri. From Pamplona my bag travelled with JacoTrans, a Spanish company offering bag transport. I learned that the route was divided into zones, and each evening you had to phone their office in the appropriate city for that zone to arrange pickup the next morning. This phone call is important because it helps the transport company determine the cargo capacity needed for the next day's deliveries. It is helpful to learn the appropriate vocabulary although the people answering the phone are very good at understanding imperfect Spanish. Small denominations of coins are needed to operate public pay phones. Other companies such as CaminoFacil serve the route too. From Sarria to Santiago XacoTrans seems to have a monopoly as a transport company with large delivery vehicles. Web pages such as http://www.theroadtosantiago.com/sending-your-backpack-ahead.html and http://amawalker.blogspot.ca/2010/05/luggage-people-transport-on-camino.html offer a lot of information about baggage transport. Certain parish or municipal albergues do not accept transported luggage because they are not open during the day and have nobody available to accept and secure the shipment of luggage. In such a case it is often possible to have your bag shipped to a nearby private albergue, hostal or hotel in the same town as the albergue where you'd like to stay, and then you can just walk over and pick it up. In your phone call to the transport service you will find out which albergues do and do not accept transported luggage. Often the hospitalero has information and luggage tags for several transport firms and will give you an envelope on which you write your name and destination and then you place the necessary fee in cash inside the envelope. These envelopes are hole-punched with string or a safety pin that is used as a means for attaching it to your bag. Between Sarria and Santiago XacoTrans uses large delivery vans and has hospitaleros handle the money and they give the pilgrim a special sticky label that affixes through a strap or handle much like an airlines luggage tag. I experienced two instances where there was no provision for bags to be attended on one end or the other of the bag's daily journey yet these were bona fide places where drop-offs and pick-ups of luggage were offered. Both times it was at municipal albergues that were several blocks off the Camino in small towns. I came to terms with the lapse by rationalizing that nobody wants your bag filled with your malodorous meagre pilgrim possessions because they are carrying their own that is already plenty heavy. I also sensed that these small communities had low crime rates, but it did rankle with me as a concern. I don't want to sound naïve, but some might say that the aura of safety that is to be found along the Camino kept my belongings safe.

Presently near Aroue and decided to get one of our rucksacks carries from Navarranx as we are succumbing to the heat after 2 weeks.
Anyway ,the majority of walkers are carrying day packs .Claudines transport is one company mentioned that operates from Cahors to Air sur L'adour . She gave us Taxi Nafarroa number and so far so good.
It has saved our Camino and has us enjoying each day again.

Jacotrans is very reliable @ 7 euro. DO NOT use the cheaper Antzin. They didn't deliver one day, and the next not until 4pm!!

I have used La Malle Postale for the last 2 years between Le Puy & Moissac- excellent service, they charge €7 per bag per day.
