Imagine my extreme delight when my favorite place to stay in Hornillos del Camino welcomed us with open arms! At first I thought they actually recognized me, but I am sure that they see a lot of people. I pulled out their guest book and showed them my page with my signature! They were so glad that I am a second time person here. And actually, it's only been four months. Some of my underwear may still be on the line outside… Those of you that were following me remember that I lost a merino wool undergarment. ...

Anyway, my lovely traveling companion suggested that I mention how amazing our pensionis, We are staying at a place called Casa de Abuelo. It is a beautiful large home, designed for pilgrims. They stock the kitchen with a lot of different types of food, and plenty of beer and plenty of cooking amenities. A wonderful wash sink is outside with a huge clothesline. In the nice warm cozy living room area are couches. board games, a fireplace in the corner, and a beautiful shower in every room.

Casa de Abuelo is owned and run by a wonderful grandmother and grandfather, and several sons and daughters occasionally make an appearance to help their parents. I love it here. Recommended. €30 for a downstairs bedroom, and €40 for the fancier upstairs rooms.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Sounds lovely. Do they have some small dorms also? I may have stayed there 2 years ago.

How busy is the CF now? Leaving Los Arcos on Saturday AM.

Thanks!

sounds wonderful! I have added the name to my folder ~ thanks!

Good morning over there on the sublime Meseta, Camino sisters! Thank you for sharing your journey and another Buen Camino to you...May your day today be a beautiful one.
(Some days down the track, but I hope you can check out Casa el Cura in Calzadilla de los Hermanillos. My friend treated us to a night there and it was soooo lovely. Like where you're staying now, it's another family-run, family-home sort of place, with roots in the community. And fantastic food.
A highlight. (And really, it was the family who were the highlights, even better than the fantastic food).

Hi Viranani - I'm starting in SJPDP on Thursday walking via Valcarlos as the Route Napoleon is closed I'm told. I'm looking forward to the 'easier on the legs' start anyway.
Thanks for your good wishes. It's my first camino and I feel like I've been planning for it for ever! Flying out in 2 days - chomping at the bit quite frankly! But that's probably all part of it too I imagine.
cheers!

Hi Sue,

my wife and I are starting on Thursday in SJPdP. Perhaps we'll meet along the way.

Buen Camino,

Jim

Hi and Buen Camino Sue and Jim! Hope you 2 can connect.
I'll be there soon, too, but not this year from St Jean--coming through Burgos on Saturday next (I may stay or roll on through, depending on tiredness and weather).
Getting excited!
Meanwhile, Deb, I hope you have a great walk today! A favorite day on the Meseta...Hontanas, San Anton, Castrojerez. May the weather be kind and may the mud not stick to your shoes.;)

Last year at this very time, mud was sticking to my shoes big time! I got to CastroJeriz today and it was raining within about 30 minutes of my arrival. Fortunately, I walked in beautiful weather today. I really love today's walk very much. Hontanas was a great place for lunch. I had bacon and eggs, and earned quite a bit of good karma – – according to my friend – – because I found an ultralight sleeping bag on the trail, and was able to return it to its owner.

I had tried to get her attention by using my super loud hiking whistle, but nobody even turned around! Maybe it's just such a big sky out there that sound gets lost.

At San Anton, A gentleman in the ubiquitous white van was selling the special crosses, so I purchased two. People do have to eat!

It was a good walking day, although reality is slapping me upside the head. Two days of long distance walking is reminding me that I was not very well-prepared, my pack isn't fitting me the same now that I have lost a bit of weight. Maybe I just need a pack with a longer torso

Anyway, all good to know. I think I'm going to have those bruises or hot spots on my back from my waist belt. I will assess it later tonight and see if I can lengthen my torso on my pack a bit.

Sounds great, Deb. Am glad you're having a great time. Buen Camino, Sister :) Caesar

Karmic brownie points...fantastic!

Oy. Well...congratulations, by the way. That's a lot of weight to have lost!
(And may the mud not happen next week too...following your footsteps...)

The toughest day I had last year was the day I walked from Castrojerez to Fromista. Woke up to a raging storm, which battered me most of the day. Hope you fare better.

Wish I was there, sigh!

The 9th edition the Lightfoot Guide will let you complete the journey your way.
Deb,
Ah, so good to see the Camino is becoming a wonderful part of your life. I remember last year this time I believe you were wondering how it will be when fully retired from teaching. Well...how is it!

Buen Camino,

Arn

Actually, it was a wet day. Not too bad though!

In late Sept 1999 Burgos through to Castrojerez passing through villages making ready for winter stacking up great piles of timber, sheep following their shepherd, wild open county with fast moving and darkening clouds. Great priest at hostel in Castrojerez but I walked on to Itero de la Vega. Hostel donative in main square and a very nice bar over the road. In 2014 Hontanas hostel was very welcoming when cycling from Belorado.

As an ex teacher perhaps a wet day on the camino comes out ahead of wet day at school?--!

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.

Hola Debrita - is this the establishment owned by Martin Shean's grandson (Taylor)'s in-laws? In the extra section of the DVD of The Way they mention a place in Hornillos as belonging to a family. Anyway thanks for the info - even if the price is a bit more than a pilgrim usually pays. Still if the quality is there then the cost is not significant. Cheers
