In late August. Renfe train to Pampalona and bus to St. Jean? We will arrive by 8 AM and want to get to St. Jean yet that day. I can't find much info on the bus from Pampalona to St. Jean? Or I am up for an alternative? We have 4 travelers so even a taxi, if we shared, might be cost effective?

Obviously you'll want the 1hr 45min itinerary. That will get you into St Jean with plenty of time to explore the town, have a leisurely dinner, and start fresh on your Camino the next morning. Be sure to buy the 1-way ticket (22.oo €).

Laurie and I were asking somewhat the same question a year ago .( we started our Camino in Sept 14) . What we decided was to take a Taxi from Madrid straight to St Jean. 5 hrs , no holdover , no multi-transit headaches . We got into Madrid ( from Chicago via Arkansas) at 8 am too and arrived in St Jean about 2 pm and had time to poke around and rest . We stayed there an extra day to rest some more . Flat rate $750 . If you have four that's $190 each . We figured we would pay up to go easy . It was well worth it for us

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
DeadFred, Great idea to just get a taxi...can you remember what company you used and were you able to "book it" on line with a confirmation???

WOW, that's about 710€ currently!!! I was able to get through more than three weeks on this amount on my Camino last year.
