May Compared to October

Hello all,
I recently walked the Camino Frances in October and am now considering walking it again in May. Its a long story but basically my wife would like to attempt it and May would be more convenient even though I found the weather and numbers etc in October to be very really favourable.

I've looked at the stats and the weather seems only marginally warmer in May compared to October (This is important as we don't like the heat :D ) And as far as numbers go, the only figures that I have been able to find show that numbers in May are higher than October but not to a great extent, if I remember correctly.

Does anyone out there have first hand experience of condition in both May and October? Would love to hear your views.
Personally I would like to start Mid April but my wife is a little concerned about some of the unpredictable mountain weather in April.

Regards

Pablo

Hello Pablo,
In 2002 I walked the camino from 16th May to 15th June. It was cool in the high places but warm on the plains.
In 2004 I walked in June and there were heatwaves in Europe with the worst fires in 10 years in Galicia. We had one day of rain in 6 weeks - none at all in Galicia.
This year summer was late coming, it snowed until the end of April and was cold, wet and muddy until well into July.
I walked in September this year and besides three days of rain at the start of our walk, we had only an occasional early morning shower at Manajrin and Santiago.
I agree with Johnnie - I don't think you can compare the weather year by year anymore. I think we have to choose a time and endure whatever mother nature serves up!
Take your wife in May - you two won't be disappointed. The days are much longer so you can have an earlier start with sunrise in mid-May at about 7am (almost 1.5 hours earlier than mid-October) and sunsets at 9:30 - two hours later than in October. The wildflowers are quite spectacular. Everything is green with new vines, new wheat, new asparagus, cherries, rasberries, apricots and citrus fruits all in season. And, if you like birding, the large white and black European stork all have fat babies in their huge nests on top of every church tower and steeple. (Listen out for the clapping of the babies beaks!)
Abrazos,
Sil

Thanks for that, it looks like May it is. We have to sort out some issues with the podiatrist, possible post tibial tendonitis or perhaps fallen arches, and then sort out some boots and start training but I'm sure it will all go well.
Thanks again for your replys
