meals at Roncesvalles

Hi, a question for the winter walkers, can you get meals (dinner/breakfast or snacks) at Roncesvalles in December/January?

As long as the albergue is open, the adjacent restaurants will be open too, as dining there is the only option. I also have read that the big new albergue has some vending machines for coffee, snacks...
Only 3 km further on in Burguete you will find a baker, where you can have breakfast, too.

I was there in mid December once, the nearby restaurants were open.

But note that the big new albergue will be closed, so no vending machines. The winter albergue will be open though, lets say it is a bit more basic, but is warm and toasty.

The first cafe you come to in Burgette was open, good for breakfast.

Casa Sabina was open mid-January for dinner only. We had to make reservations for a meal time (not many seats available) but food was hot and excellent!

Different part of the facility. The new Albergue is closest to the point you arrive at from SJPDP while the one room usually allocated for the winter is in a old section on the right as you pass under the breeze way as you exit the facility towards Burgette. The new has beautiful sections of four beds, lockers for packs, new bathrooms, etc while the old is a single old room with about 6-7 bunk beds and old bathrooms/showers therein. Big difference between the two however I have good memories from both!

When leaving Roncesvalles and pass the famous road sign advising the traveller of the 790 km journey ahead to SdC, you enter a path that parallels the highway to Pamplona. Leaving the forest after about 2 km, Peregrinos turn left for a short walk to the highway and, as it is crossed, there is the Supermercado, to the left of the short path leading to the main section of the Village. It can be easily found using Google Maps and placing the little guy on the map to give a street view. Burguete also has a good number of options for restaurants but it seems that the little Supermercado just outside of town is the only one in the area.

If you have it marked on your Google Maps app, you can tap share and copy and then paste it here, which will give a URL that others can tap/click on. Then the store will come up on their Google Maps.

Love this little place and stop there every year for supplies for the day. There are also picnic tables nearby which makes for a nice stop.

So we will probably be walking down the road due to snow.. is the little supermarket then on the left hand side about 2 km along from the albergues at Roncessvalles? We went through the forest section last time and missed it.. I am assuming we can get supplies - ie bread, cheeses choc etc when we pass between 8 and 9am? Thanks for your patience everyone. I am going to try and work out how to use and download google maps on the weekend.

Off topic and because I am technologically challenged, I will take my current phone to Spain but will use a new sim card (purchased in Australia). Do I need to download all the maps (and Apps) that I need AFTER I have put the new sim card in, or can I download using my existing card? I want to be using my current sim until I board the plane!

No, your apps and other content don't change. The only thing that changes is how you are connected to a cellular signal. Of course your phone number will change though.
