A while ago somebody made a post complaining that some people made one camino and then moved on to other things. It was a bit dismissive, at least. I think that those who do one camino and move on have the right idea, taking their camino back to their normal lives, leaving behind the memories.
I dont fall into this wise group myself, having made my first camino in 1990 and several since, my last being a month ago.
1990 reminded me of Mme Debril, otherwise named Mme Lourdes by the "unique" Coelho, fired as he is by too much Carlos Casteneda. She can be seen in the interview by David Lodge when she surpassed herself with a "celebrity", that unfortunate category of person. At the time when I met Mme Debril, it transpired that she too divided pilgrims into categories which she approved/disapproved of, according to her "values". Mme Debril had her home on the camino, and clearly drew purpose from this in later life. Yet I wouldnt have missed meeting her for the world. Without internet, pilgrims spoke of her along the Way. She was a one-off, despite all.
No arriviste myself, I wonder if I have the dubious and empty honour of being the 'earliest ' pilgrim here? I sincerely hope not. I did meet someone recently who was involved with the camino in the 1980's, which was reassuring.
