Morris n pirates 007.JPG [ At a Mayday Festival in Bovey Tracey in deepest darkest Devon I happened upon these gaily dressed Morris Men from Dartington. To my surprise instead of sticks or (horror) hankies, they were wielding Scallop Shells and bashing them together as part of the dance. Apparently it was a tradition from the Isle of Man which they re-invigorated. The shells are strengthened around the sharp edge to protect their hands and lacquered for longevity. Folk in the Isle of Man have now started to do it again themselves....
It was great to see and hear these beautiful shells being used - especially after seeing the stained glass depiction of St James in the local church... no matter where you go.....!
