Camino Frances-Apr/May 2019
For anyone setting out from Roncesvalles be aware the municipals in zubiri and larrasoana are closed. We went through yesterday and there was all of a sudden a huge influx of pilgrims that had no where to stay in zubiri. We ended up taking a taxi to villava just before Pamplona to find a bed. Then I took a 30 Euro cab back to zubiri to restart my Camino. Now we're booking the rest of this week. Lesson learned.

Very light, comfortable and compressible poncho. Specially designed for protection against water for any activity.

Our Atmospheric H30 poncho offers lightness and waterproofness. Easily compressible and made with our Waterproof fabric, its heat-sealed interior seams guarantee its waterproofness. Includes carrying bag.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Also, the 'loss' of the Larrasoana municipal is actually a good thing at least IMHO. There are another one or two albergues in town.

I stayed there ONCE on my first Camino and got VERY ill as a result. The conditions were extremely unpleasant.

Always have a Plan B...
Not only the albergue. When I was there (same year we walked together for a couple days,, actually, T2), the hospitalera was one of the most unpleasant persons I have met on any Camino. Will never stop there again.

Edit: For firsttimers: Albergues were full, and the cheapest hostal was at 55 Euros... It's at the beginning of the Camino, so it's easy to get lured into it. Atleast me, I felt it was a trap, so moved on.

I stayed there on first camino 2001. I wish I’d had a Plan B.

Am I missing something - I don't understand WHY these two municipal places are closed! Has the Corazon reopened in Viskarret? If so you could have an early stop and then walk to Pamplona in one day. But has been indicated if its Holy Week/Easter many of the lower priced beds will be gone.Cheers

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

The municipal in Zubiri was hands down the worst albergue I experienced on the whole Camino Frances in 2015. It was dirty, the shower building one big open room off premise, the hospitalero very unfriendly and I feared bedbugs were going to be the order of the night! Thankfully not...but maybe the Permathrin I used helped.😉

That said, a pilgrim should always be thankful for a place to lay his head and the price was right!☺
The following year I turned plan B into plan A and had a much better experience.

It would be useful to know if these closures were just for a night or two - sometimes due to need for bedbug treatment, or because the hospitaleros are ill, for example - or whether they are closed indefinitely.

When I did my Camino in 2015, the municipal was full and they directed me down the street. I was disappointed, but it was one of my best places. I had a room with about 12 other females and we had two showers in the room. At breakfast everyone introduced themselves and I had a great time - except for getting an upper bunk!

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

I wish that muni had been full when I arrived in 2015!😜

Yes, I'd like to know if these are permanent closures. I'll be there in about a month, and I'd rather not be surprised by finding no room at the inn when I reach Zubiri and Larrasoaña

I suggest you try to check out either with Neil at the Abbey - he will know - or the sisters at Zabaldika. An earlier post suggested this is because of Holy Week, and that sounds right. I was lucky, I think, when I walked the Cf from Roncesvalles a lifetime ago: we were taken to there, and collected from Larrasoana and the following day returned to the spot. Same happened next day in Cizure Menor. as next day in Puente. After that, same as everyone else. Not that I would personally be capable, but I saw many pilgrims making their way from Roncesvalles to Zabaldika in the one go. it's (only) around 34km..

I started out from SJPdP mid Holy week in 2017. We had made reservations a month ahead covering the few days until after Easter. Glad we did. Stopping in Zubiri for a snack we saw a huge busload of pilgrims being taken "somewhere" as the whole town was "completo"! I heard someone on the forum say they had to sleep on a park bench in Pamplona!

EDIT- Ha..I mean just one person...not the whole busload! 😂

Larrasoana used to have a certain renown for the occasions when the portico of San Nicholas was opened for the sleeping of Pilgrims. Bedded down on whatever kind of mattress could be found spare around the town. And for Pilgrims fed on whatever the good wives of the town could raise. Sad to see how the towns reputation has slipped as Pilgs have got more particular

The locals still let you sleep in the sports hall in Larrasoana if you ask nicely! Steel walled, concrete floored zeppelin hangar type thing. No nothing - water, showers etc! Freezing cold even on summer nights. Slept in there a few times now due to staying in the pub with the locals after pilgrim beddy bye time. Good sleeping bag and a roll mat = bliss. Had some good nights in there. Then breakfast at the 'mad mans' (forgot his name) supermarket up the road listening to Jimmy Hendrix. 😎

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
As of yesterday, the Zubiri muni was still closed with zero sign of renovation happening. You can look through the windows and see beds with foam mattresses and paper sheets, but little else. And since it is closed, there’s no “overflow” sleeping on mattresses in the attached sports hall. 😞.

Thanks for the update have bitten the bullet and booked a private alderge don't want to be forced to push on as the body wont be hardened to it . Also means a more relaxed walk as its paid for !

The pub followed by sleeping in the sports hall is better than sleeping in Larrasoana Municipal! Plus, the locals are friendly too! One night a young couple brought in their newborn baby girl, locals went ga ga as Spanish do with kids. I was very suprised and delighted when the babe got passed to me too!

As a specialist child nurse I get that all the time, esp if the baby/child is full of snot :)

Yes indeed. Angel runs the supermarket/bar opposite the rather good private Albergue. He was giving free glasses of wine away when I was first there (I was buying beer so made for an odd mix). He was seriously helpful when a Finn I was walking with collapsed - too much sun and then a beer. An angel named Angel.

Hey Bonita,
being curious about the name of the albuerge you stayed in. Could you please tell me? Thanks a lot, Muriel

Is the municipal Alberque in Larrasoaina still closed . This was not my favourite Alberque to say the least but it was only one night .I start my 2nd CF in September and am planning on stopping there again as it fits in with my plans.
If it is closed will it be opened again this year ?

In June it was still closed. Maybe someone knows more? Zubiri might be still closed. It was under construction.
Buen Camino

I like Albergue San Nicolás in Larrasoaña.

Yup. I've already made my reservations for Holy Week for 2020 in the larger cities.

Sorry, I didn’t see this until today. It was right over the bridge, the first right turn. Almost immediately. Pretty nondescript. 12 females in one room with two, full bathrooms. Other rooms had both male and female. No idea what they looked like. Dinner was great. I hope this isn’t too late for you.

Hi, Gronze shows that Zubiri Municipal is currently CLOSED:

Nota Junio 2019: Cerrado por obras

Note June 2019: Closed for works

https://www.gronze.com/navarra/zubiri/albergue-peregrinos-zubiri

Jill

It seems to me that the note quoted shows that it was closed in June. How accurate it is for the current status depends on how quickly word will get to Gronze when it re-opens and how quickly it will be posted after that. If the work was scheduled to be completed in August, it is plausible that it could be done but Gronze hasn't caught up yet. Of course, it is also plausible that the work could be taking longer than anticipated. Many renovations go that way.

Could it have been "Albergue El Palo de Avellano"? Stayed there last year. Good Rooms, Great food, very clean.

Does anyone know if these two are open now, in September?

I went through Zubiri 10 days ago and it was still closed. We had beds booked a few kms further on but there were so many pilgrims who were struggling and had to take taxis. I dont know about Larrasoana but Zubiri was a major issue.

Yeh we did zubri last night, was a little late due to taking breakfast option at roncenvilles, but got there 1pm, the municipal still shut but beds still available, later on people having to get taxis elsewhere,

Could be wrong but we coundnt get into one as metal fence cordened off and full of builders, maybe we saw a different one

The main building by the square was open but the overflow barn on the other side of the street was closed

Ah OK, in estella now at the excellent albergue parroquial Peregrinos, really felt the warmth today but tending to arrive by 11, 30 most days then having time to see the sights, sorry if drifting off topic, amazing experience

Does anyone have information about albergues in Zubiri and the surrounding area in 2021? What is the cheapest accommodation option?

You can consult Gronze.com. Here's the link to the Zubiri to Pamplona stage. Note that a circle with a diagonal line indicates that the albergue is closed. If you want to read Gronze in English (or any other language than Spanish) use the Chrome browser to translate the site.
