I used an iPhone to listen to music, no problems, just don't crank up the volume. If you can hear the rest of the world then you will be ok.

My experience of bikes was even with or without the music you missed some and 99% of the riders were cool.

For me walking is in itself meditation, sometimes but not always, music enhanced this but then so did birdsong, the crunch of the pathway and silence

Pererin - I've also found only plugging in one ear also works when I'm out walking. I learned a few years ago walking the dog that blocking out the world wasnt a great idea... so as you say, keep it down or try the one ear approach :D
