For lovers of music of the Camino the most beautiful CD available is -
Miracles of Santiago - a compilation of medieval chants and polyphony
of Saint James from the Codex Calixtinus. The mainly liturgical
music is hauntingly evocative of Mass attended on the camino. The CD
comes with a booklet with all the words of the different works in
Latin, English, French and German. The quartet of women singers - Anonymous 4 - were formed in 1986 to experiment with the sound of medieval chant and polyphony. They have performed to critical acclaim across America, Britain and Europe.
When I first listened to the CD it took me back to mass in the Cathedral and gave me goose bumps!
Available from Amazon but don't foget the apostrophe in Sant'iago when you search.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
a very good cd, the first of a series, of music for Vespers for the Eve of the Feast of St James was produced last year by Ensemble Organum, who are now based in the abbey buildings at Moissac.
http://www.organum-cirma.fr/index_fichiers/Page340.htm
The links to their clips are broken; should read
http://www.organum-cirma.fr/SON/Dum%20paterweb.mp3
http://www.organum-cirma.fr/SON/CongaudeantWeb.mp3
If you click on the little 'Entrez' on the 'cd', there's some 'sleeve notes' on their interpretation, noticeably different, particularly for Dum Pater Familias.

for anyone interested in pilgrim songs, I've discovered that the French National Library have put the 1899 Les chansons des pélerins de Saint-Jacques, text and music of French songs including the well-known Grande Chanson ("Quand nous partîmes de France"), on their excellent Gallica site http://gallica.bnf.fr/notice?N=FRBNF31997957
I've noticed their online books are not always available - they may have a limitation on number of concurrent users or something like that.

If you would like to sing along to Dum Paterfamilias whilst listening to the download, here are the words. (If anyone would like the music, email me and I will send it to you.)

Dum Paterfamilas (Codex Calixtinus)

Dum paterfamilias, Rex universorum
Donaret provincias, jus apostolorum
Jacobus Hispanias, lux illustrat morum,

*Primus ex Apostolis! Martyr Jerosolymis!
Jacobus Egregio sacer est martyrio.

Jacobi Gallecia open rogat piam,
Glebe cuius Gloria dat insignem viam,
Ut precum frequentia cantet melodiam:
Herru Sanctiagu! Got Santiciagu!
E ultreia! E sus eia! Deus adjuva nos.

God, Father of all mankind, King, ruler of the world
Gave to his apostles dear,
lands, each to their own just care
James in his own land of Spain,
Shines out with a holy flame

*First amongst Apostles now!
Martyred at Jerusalem!
James became the holiest
by illustrious martyrdom!

Lo! James’s Galicia calls out for our pious toil,
Marching on the holy way, road over her glorious soil.
Blending all our prayers in one harmony of endless song:
To Lord St James! To God’s St James!
And Onward! And Upward! God speed our way!

While walking the VdlP my companions and I were invited to a rehearsal by the "Banda de Gaitas de Cea" - Spain's most famous pipe band. It proved to be a wonderful experience which will live with me for a very long time. The future of Galician bagpipe music is safe in the hands of these talented young people.
They gave me a copy of a CD "Carlos Nunez & Amigos". The recorded concert features the Cea band, National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland & The Chieftains (Hi John). Great music for walking.

I have another Galician favorite, Luar Na Lubre ...ahh, great stuff. Have a look at one of their videos here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JQnIPv3n7s

It looks like the video is recorded out on Costa da Morte. The song is called Chove en Santiago (Rain in Santiago) and describes well the latest weather here.

Enjoy!

see my page http://peterrobins.co.uk/camino/lorca.html for the background on this. They have a new singer since I last heard them - seems a bit odd that they chose a Portuguese rather than Galician.

If you're into piping, the list I gave has the Camino disc the Real banda de gaitas produced for the 1999 holy year. You can listen to a couple of clips on their website http://www.realbanda.com/eng/frames.htm - so if you think the Scots are the only people who like massed bands of pipers, think again!

The list is though missing Iacobus Magnus, which the folk band Milladoiro did with the English Chamber Orchestra - another odd combination - for the 1993 holy year, recorded partly in London's Abbey Road studios, and partly in Padron.

Good suggestion, still could be.

Carlos Nuñez is awesome. Via a Nuñez concert I went to in Compostela a few years ago on the Praza Quintana, on a 25 July eve, I started to appreciate Galego music as never before. Here he is again:
