Time of past OR future Camino
may 10- june 15
Hi :) am a 47yr old F that am drawn to do the camino early May 10th and returning 36 days later just to be safe. I am fit however anxious as i cannot picture it in my head.
i understand that if i fly to Madrid on may10th i can take a bus to pamplona....i read i could just get the ticket at the airport. then how and when do i get to STPdP? is the same day or do i sleepin pamplona? I read i could share a taxi to STPdP? ... what about the Orisson they mention that happens after i walk from STpdP. I wish someone would guide me step by step please.

is the bus from Pamplona to Roncesvalles.

When you arrive at Pamplona you might look to see if there are other pilgrims wanting to go directly to SJPP on a taxi share. It is at least 100€ to hire the taxi as it is 70km from Pamlona. If there is a group of you make sure you agree the final price BEFORE you set out.

You will find that most days there will be taxis offering to go to SJPP at the monastery at Roncesvalles. If you can get a share that will save you money.

Orisson is an albergue OUT of SJPP on the route Napoleon.

you will need to book in if you wish to stay there asp.

There is a pilgrim office at 39 rue de la Citadelle SJPP who will give you all the advice that you need for the first stage of the Camino to Roncesvalles.

edit addition. If you arrive at Pamplona too late to take the evening bus to Roncesvalles get to the municipal albergue Albergue Jesus y Maria in Pamplona and see if you can stay there overnight. There will be people there who will be able to offer advice.

Hi Sharona,

I see the above is your first post. How great it is to have so many questions filled with excitement. With a month yet to go, I'd like to give two suggestions:

1. Grab a glass of favorite drink and scroll through the recent posts here. There are incredible people who have answered any and all questions one could ever have.

2. Look above in the blue space, "Search Forum". Type in some of your "key wording", and you will find nearly everything you could imagine and even more.

When I do this, I find answers to questions I didn't even know I had. I think this will be extremely helpful for you as well.

In the meantime, I can tell you Orisson is an alburgue only a couple of hours (?) walk from SJPdP. I do know they get booked quickly during this time of year. Even though I have passed by it twice, I only hear great things of staying there and a good break for crossing the mountains.

I'm excited for you. May your journey bring you all desired.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Try flying to London or Paris instead of Madrid.

Then catch a discount flight (from London) to Biarritz (Bayonne) or the train from Paris to Bayonne. There is a train that goes 4 times per day from Bayonne to SJPdP.

That solves a lot of the transportation issues between Pamplona to SJPdP that seem to be a struggle for a lot of people.

If you must go to Madrid and Pamplona then there is a train that runs to Irun/Hendaye (Spain) and from Hendaye (France) to Bayonne.

There is sometimes a once daily bus from Pamplona to SJPdP too.

It all depends on your arrival times to Madrid. You can fly\take a train\ take a bus to Pamplona
Finding accomodations there depends also on your arrival time. If you arrive early you can try the public albergue or any other smal private albergues.
Remember to pick your passport there.
There's a bus from Pamplona o SJPDP, information is somewhere on this forum.
I sugest you tour SJPDP for no more then 2 hours then climb the first 5 km to Hounto or Orrisson to make it easy the next day.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
