New mirador (lookout) at the Oseira Monastery

Like many of the monasteries I have gotten to know on my Caminos, the Oseira monastery is located in a jaw-droppingly-beautiful location. When I stayed there, I took a little walk up, because in my experience, looking down at these sites is usually gorgeous. I’ve attached the pictures I took.

A gallego newspaper reports the opening of a mirador (lookout) down to the monastery, which is a few hundred feet higher than I got. Just beautiful. Those monks really knew how to choose perfect sites for their monasteries!

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
I visited the Monastery in 2015 during my walk on the VDLP, but did not stay there. I walked there from Cea and took the tour. The young man (Noviciate?) who conducted the tour was very friendly, warm, and helpful. I also met the painter monk at the shop. His very beautiful paintings were being sold in the shop. He gave me a small painting of Christ as a gift when he learned that I was walking the VDLP as a pilgrim. They asked me if I wanted to stay but I declined since the day was young. My pilgrim friend who was sick did opt to stay in a room there but she said it was very cold which did not help her get better. So they arranged to move her to a private warm and sunny room nearby just outside of the monastery and took very good care of her until she was well to walk again. These are lovely kind hearted monks. The monastery is definitely worth seeing.

We did not stay here either, and there are common reports of it being cold, damp and uncomfortable. However, I had found this article some time ago regarding a planned renovation by the Xunta. Not sure how this plan is being impacted by the pandemic, but the article is dated 6/2020. So, it will be much more accommodating in the future!
