Congratulations to Paulus and his group for the new refuge in France.
The Amis et pèlerins de St Jacques de Compostelle Voie de Vézelay are very active in establishing refuges along the route and waymarking the route. They find appropriate building in towns without refuges, buy or lease them, refurbish it into a refuge, then staff it with volunteers. As an example, the one in St. Ferme was newly constructed and staffed by a volunteer couple from Paris on a two-week tour. In Sainte Foy la Grande and another city, there is no refuge or inexpensive accommodations, so the Amis have volunteer families that pick you up at the church and you are their guest for the night in their home. An advance call is necessary, of course. In one case, we stayed with a couple who had been approached by the Amis because their home was an appropriate distance along the route, and the retired husband built a gorgeous, if some what eclectic, refuge out of rubble next to their home.
There is quite an effort in France to compete with the huge popularity of the Camino Frances. If they stick with it for a decade, I think they will succeed!
