News from Castille y Leon

* As at 1 July, 9800 pilgrims stayed at the albergue Carbajales . Among these was a group of prisoners from various Spanish prisons who spent the night in May, en route to Compostela from Somport. This
pilgrimage took place in relay and belongs to a pioneering project called "Caminos de la Libertad”.

* The Japanese Association of Friends Camino de Santiago, has designed and developed a striking and colorful credential.

* A new pilgrim hostel will be created in Bercianos Camino Real by an old Catalan pilgrim, who has overcome cancer and wants to "Give back to the Road that gave me the Way".

* In early May the German comedian and TV presenter Hape Kerkeling German was in Leon promoting his book dealing with his experiences in the Camino de Santiago. The book is written as a diary and has sold
almost 4 million copies in Germany.

* During the month of May, filming was begun in the city of Leon, and Murias de Rechivaldo and the Polvazares Castrillo, a movie entitled "I'll take the end of the world." The film is about the relationship between a German father and his daughter who, after making the Way of Santiago, are able to improve their relationship which until then had been disastrous.

* Sadly, on June 3, an Italian pilgrim cyclist was killed by a car near Villadangos. Coincidentally, it occurred in the same place where only a week before, there was a serious accident that killed several people.

* Alternate routes:
1) In the book entitled "Roads to Santiago by El Bierzo Alto ", Jovino Andiano discusses the routes of Manzanal and Cepeda: "these are two traditional routes with five centuries of existence at the time were very important, because pilgrims flowed through them on their way to Santiago, but were forgotten".
2) Past Sahagun and shortly before Calzada del Coto, there is a fork on the road to Santiago:
The first arm links to Bercianos and Burgo Ranero ( "Camino Real Frances").
The second links to Calzada del Coto and Calzadilla de los Hermanillos. (Via Trajan) The historian Isaac Moreno Gallo argues that this second option is the 'real' way: "it is certain that this is the
Roman road and was the prime Camino de Santiago. The other is an alternative and relatively modern route.
