The Pilgrim's Office will recover face-to-face attention from Wednesday, July 1, and it will do so with a strict protocol to avoid the safety distance between walkers and workers, and will avoid contacts that can detract from guarantees to the city. Although the office of the Carretas road has been closed since March 13, the service to pilgrims was closed actively in the distance.
In a mailbox located at the entrance door to the office, the pilgrims' credentials and data were left, to which the declaration of the state of alarm caught them on the Camino and, despite everything, they decided to complete the kilometers of the route and get to town.
Precisely, between March 13 and June 15, coinciding with the alarm period, the documents of 243 pilgrims were recognized, and the compostela was processed and sent to them. Most of these credentials correspond to the first days of confinement, and to pilgrims a few kilometers from Santiago. Those who were further away were those who chose to return to their homes, especially foreigners. Since June 15, with the end of the state of alarm, they have come to reach some pilgrims, who will leave their data in the same mailbox. Some of them contacted the office by telephone and the compostela was processed. The number will be counted when Wednesday finally opens its doors.
This year will undoubtedly be an exception in the statistics of the Pilgrim's Office, due to the confinement that prevented mobility and, therefore, pilgrimages. Although the forecast aimed to exceed the data of previous years, now it is only expected to recover the pulse and wait for 2021, holy year, suppose the total recovery of the routes to Santiago.
Between January 1 and March 12, the Pilgrim's Office had delivered 6,785 compostelas. A figure lower than the first three months of last year, when 11,244 pilgrims arrived. Although the data for 2020 does not include the losses of the last 15 days of March and, in addition, last year Easter fell in March, a factor that always increases the number of pilgrimages. This year it was in April, with the Camino closed and the acts of Easter suspended throughout the country.
