The mud, wind, and rain are pretty universal.
But the getting lost...

So there I was, early one morning, on the tail end of the Lana, blissfully taking off up the hill out of Santo Domingo de Silos after following a waymarked sign at the top of the village. I had a GPS on the phone backed up by screenshots of someone's wikiloc track - but hadn't tested the GPS in Spain and wasn't even looking at the screenshots. The sign had pointed to Covarrubias, after all, and that was the next town - so why bother? Never mind that the distance seemed suspiciously long. I figured that was just a wild mis-measurement.
(So many assumptions...what could possibly go wrong?...)
After a while, when it seemed like the path was going in totally the wrong direction, I found out that the GPS didn't work without an internet connection. Oh, well. The screenshots were OK, though, so I merrily followed them, 'bending the map' to agree with what I told myself I was seeing.

More than an hour later after a very nice wrong turn that led to a dead-end viewpoint, and convincing myself I was someplace else altogether, I came down a hill to a sign that said 'Sad Hill Cemetery'...which was a complete surprise. Sad Hill Cemetery?! Like...The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly Sad Hill Cemetery??
Well. How bizarre.
It was completely surreal. And it was so strange that no-one had mentioned this - but how in the world could they have missed it? I told myself a story that they were intentionally not saying anything for the surprise effect. Which it was, of course. I didn't linger, though - I had set out early without breakfast, and was eager to get to Covarrubias for something to eat.

So it was even more of a surprise when I came to the nearest hamlet to find that I wasn't at all where I thought I should be. It wasn't the cute tourist town full of restaurants and places to eat that I expected to find. There were several houses but no bar no nothing...which was 'interesting.' There were some people cleaning up after a fiesta from the night before who kindly told me where I wasn't. And Covarrubias was many kms away.

Well, no breakfast for me. (Nor lunch, either but that's another story.)
But I saw Sad Hill Cemetery!
And the view getting there was stunning.

So if you're on the Frances and go to Santo Domingo de Silos, and decide to walk back to Burgos...
First eat breakfast.
And pack a lunch, because there's no-where to eat. But the 'wrong way' to Covarrubias on the GR 82 is stunning. And you get the Spaghetti Western attraction thrown in for free.

And please tell the good folks in Contreras that the peregrina did get safely to her destination. They were concerned, the elderly ladies and clucking over me like mother hens.
It was the best day ever.

That...is a lovely story!

Completely off thread but reading VNwalkings post reminded me of a time in South West France and how the accidental journeys can lead to the most wonderful experiences.
One evening, we ended up in Rivesaltes (just outside Perpignan) and parked up in the square. It was absolutely deserted but worth a look at the architecture and to soak up the atmosphere, solitude, quiet and enjoy a balmy walk. The side streets were a different story...bustling with locals eating at tables like a street party. The chances, as a tourist, of getting to eat were less than nil, it was obviously locals only!
It was obvious something was going to happen!
Very shortly, the whole village decamped to a bridge on the outskirts where a procession passed of various villagers dressed in rustic guises with the centrepiece being a large dragon. The procession proceeded to the rivers edge where the slaying of the dragon took place broadcast by loudspeakers to the watching audience.
Following this a firework display took place, the like of which I have never seen before or since! (Not even after a Rolling Stones concert...and that was good).
Just goes to show sometimes that the most accidental things have the most joyous and lovely endings....oh! and I was seriously bitten that night..I love to travel and I love European customs and cultures!!!

I can't really admit to being confused, can I? this is one of the crazy threads, isn't it?
Yes, we now have two going simultaneously! Are there enough hours in the day to devote nonsensical clichés on both of them...and still have enough time to get our daily chores and other life commitments finished? Not sure I'll even have time to train for my next camino! :D

Some members from the " NOT a serious thread " want to begin a thread where you can post about the stories of Not being bitten.

Enjoy my friends.
Did not get bitten on Camino Ingles or Portuguese. But did get bitten while staying in a 5* Hotel in New York while on business:-? Was not a trump hotel so it could not be blamed on the Mexicans

I’ve never been bitten by a current bun but I have been badly bitten by a scampi in the Lake District...seriously!
Were you swimming or snorkeling? ...seriously! I think a scampi is a shrimp, but I thought they were only in the ocean!

I did the most suffering cuz I've had measles, mumps and chicken pox!
You're not the only one. Everybody got them when I was that age. No vaccines yet. Both kinds of measles, mumps, chickenpox, then I got scarlet fever too. That was not as common.

All that we are is the result of what we have thought.
I have been not bitten a few times on the camino.

But I did get bitten in Villavante. By Coco the parrot. (Albergue Santa Lucia).

He didn't like my singing.

I always visit him when I pass by now. And sing to him when he's locked in his cage.

Revenge is sweet.
The next time you are passing you could be in for a chock.

Looks like you have suffered the most thus far. Your prize is?

I've been bitten by the camino bug.
Does that count?
It does. However, we've all been bitten by same bug. Ergo, we are all on level footing.

Good news guys 'n gals.

My bad-luck ran out today.

After years of un-luckily being nearly bed-bug bitten on Caminos I did some gardening today and got bitten by mosquitos.

I'm so happy.

Buen (finding your own biters) Camino
Just wait till bristle boy finds some ultra apposite as a reposte!

Well, whatever about being bitten, today I renewed my subscription... is that a sign of being Very Seriously Bitten??? So now, seeing how and as (bad English, do not copy) I missed a few pages on the not serious thread, not to mention all the others, i gather there are livelier emojis lurking around. Spill the beans again, someone, please! How do I access them on an ipad?
Have just seen I am twice a donating member. How can I fix that?

I don’t know whether the iPad has the same keyboard as the iPhone. If it has on the bottom line is a smiley face..press and voila!
If it isn’t then completely ignore kirkie and someone with an iPad is better placed than me to advise!
