October 12 Holiday - Book Ahead in Santiago!

Hi everyone,
This Thursday is October 12, a major holiday across all of Spain (Día de Hispanidad). If you're arriving in Santiago later this week, it would be a great idea to book your lodging to make sure you have a place in your price range (whether it be albergue, hostal, hotel, pension, etc.). We're still in high season in Santiago and accommodations have been full during the weekends, and this weekend will be even more busy with the holiday falling on a Thursday.

Buen Camino to those walking!

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

The October average last year was 911 compostelas per day. This October is averaging 1,258. The number of pilgrims does not seem to be slacking off, and the record October set last year may get beaten by 10,000!

Wow! It does seem busy here for sure, but I didn't know it was that much more busy. Thanks for doing the research! :)

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
I suspect that it is pilgrims who now avoid September because it has become too busy!! They have to beat the October 31 albergue closings. With numbers up, perhaps fewer albergues will close at the end of October, and November will become a convenient time to walk. Commercial operations probably would love to extend the season (but not if they ALL stay open; that would be too many beds). The owner operated and occupied albergues may see financial motives to stay open a bit longer.

Hi Natefaith,
Arriving Santiago 11th Oct, heading to Finisterre on Thursday 12th. Do you know if the bus/transport system will be affected by the holiday? No bus booked at this stage, accommodation booked;-)

Hi Kym and Helen, there will be bus service but it will run on the holiday/ Sunday schedule rather than the typical weekday schedule. Take a look at the attached schedule PDF.

Buen Camino; hope to see you when you get back from Finisterre!
