Like the cuckoo, the hoopoe's name is onomatopoeic (and yes, I had to check the spelling in the dictionary). As we walked the Via de la Plata, we'd hear at least one a day. Finally, I managed to get a picture of one. They are as handsome as they are vocal. This shot it heavily cropped - they are shy characters. 2 May, 2012. Seems like a lifetime ago now.DSCN1288.1.jpg

As is their scientific name, thanks to Linnaeus, is probably one of my favorites, Upupa epops; Upupa is the Latin and ἔποψ is the Ancient Greek name for this wonderful bird. I saw one on the Frances only once, on the lawn of El Jardín de Muruzábal (one of the nicest albergues on the Frances). Of course I had no camera.
And I am surprised to find that I didn't take any photos of the albergue.
But here is the road between there and Eunate, looking back. Forgive me if I posted this before; it is a favorite.

Chris was touring in Catalonia and France with her family and was able to squeeze me into her schedule twice
Rick, it was so great to meet you...a nice memory! I think it was a "two-way" street though, and you were able to squeeze me into your schedule.😊

P.S. Another thread here I haven't kept up on, but took a look again today and always enjoy scrolling through to see everyone's photo contributions.😃

June 17, 2019. Near the turnoff for the descent to Belesar, just before the Igrexa de San Paio de Diomondi on the Invierno, I took a photo of steps leading to an overgrown building. Close to the steps was a cruciero. I was so focused on moving on to see Diomondi that I didn't take the time to explore this place - the remains of the Igrexa Santa María do Camiño. Next time! @VNwalking and @peregrina2000 - do you remember this spot?

In general, of course, but I totally missed this! Being so focused on both the bus stop/mojon, and then getting to Diomondi made for tunnel vision.

It doesn't take long, does it? That very good blog said the church was abandoned about 100 years ago. But the people have helped things along:
En abril de 1998, los concejales socialistas pedían al gobierno municipal que pusiese fin al uso del antiguo templo como basurero.

I arrived weary yet thrilled and sincerely thankful the last time I was able to enter Santiago de Compostela after 56 days of walking always carrying my full pack.
This 10th camino had been three concurrent journeys; looking at the cultural heritage along the Camino Frances, traversing on foot northern Spain east to west, and a deeper discovery of myself.

I am sincerely thankful for you and all you contribute to this forum. 10 Camino’s WOW!! You’re amazing 🤩 Walking into the Square is always a thrill, I’d be grateful and truly blessed if I’m able to do it one more time. 2022?? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Only God knows.

I do get envious when looking at photos of the Invierno. Just a little bit. My exposure to that was by car, post the Ingles, for a few days en route to Pamplona via La Playa de los Catedrales. I am not a bit envious of the ascents!

Reading this forum has got me interested in Romanesque architecture. I kind of knew what it was but only in a sketchy way and I realise that if I had known then what I know now, I would have taken even more interest than I did in what I was looking at. All is not lost though (and boy will I be gung-ho for the delights of the Lana if plans work out and we actually get there, Santo Domingo de Silos, here I come!). This is from the Puerto de las Platerías, the south portico of Santiago cathedral. Not the masterpiece of the Portico de la Gloria, but a lot easier to see, being outside. It is reckoned to be a mish-mash of bits from other parts of the cathedral, but I love this particular statue. It is very spare but very expressive, a lovely piece of work.

On that glorious day in late 2019, who knew what the world would soon face? Nor did I imagine I would go through four surgeries and nearly three hard yet good years before I would be able/allowed to walk the pilgrim paths again.

Looking at you, 2022, and the promise you hold.

The unidentified location of this Crucifix is somewhere on the Camino Portuguese within the maze of paths/lanes near or in the hamlet of Rúa de Francos. Freestanding crucufixes such as this are common all along the CP.

Inside the church of Santa Maria, Los Arcos, CF 2018. At certain times of the day, it the church is opened and you are more or less free to walk round. The interior is Baroque and intense - that is the only word I have to describe it, but whoever painted the organ pipes definitely had a sense of humour.

That's hysterical I won't be able to look at an organ pipe the same way again.

Mine too.
It was a magical day, one of those where the past spoke so loudly it was almost audible.

Before heading out of Barcelona's old town I slipped by the "guards" at the cathedral by telling them that I just wanted to touch the door (it was still early and they were there to say that the cathedral wasn't open).

Barcelona must have been a rich city in the 14th century; the two Santa Maria churches, del Pi and del Mar, and the cathedral were being constructed at the same time.

An unusual view of the cathedral's facade:

Alfonso IX of León
His second wife and Queen consort, Berengaria, has a fascinating biography. I've read of her before. After the dissolution of their marriage Berengaria became Queen of Castile in her own right, later abdicating in favor of her and Alfonso's son, Ferdinand. Even though Alfonso wanted his throne to pass to his daughters from his first marriage Berengaria managed to get Ferdinand named King of Leon in their place and thus reunited Castile and Leon.

Here's the link to her Wikipedia article.

I almost forgot Monday's photo. After the cathedral I headed up the Passeig de Grácia. I did stop to touch Gáudi's Casa Battllò and up a bit and across the Avenue, his Casa Milá. I visited both in 2015 and only took some bad snapshots this time so I'll be kind to you. At the end of the avenue though a lovely neighborhood church in a modern style waited for me with open doors, the Església dels Josepets.

ကျာ်ဣသိယဵု Kyaiktiyo Pagoda - in the Burmese language, 'pagoda' (or paya) means temple. This is the Golden Rock, supposedly balanced on a single hair of the Buddha. It is in the Mon region of Myanmar and is a Buddhist place of pilgrimage. Pilgrimage doesn't necessarily involve a long walk, the essential act is to visit the sacred spot, in this case after a journey terminating in a hair-raising but mercifully short trip up a winding mountain road in the back of an open truck. Buddhists stay overnight in the sprawling mountain top temple, whole families, even entire villages sleep out on mats spread over the shiny, hard tiles. The rest of us in over-priced hotels outside the perimeter, which means we miss the obviously joyous experience of the devotees inside.

You've made my afternoon.

Pilgrimage doesn't necessarily involve a long walk, the essential act is to visit the sacred spot, in this case after a journey terminating in a hair-raising but mercifully short trip up a winding mountain road in the back of an open truck.
My friend told me of her first visit there as a child with her father in the '60s - before the (yes, scary) trucks when everyone walked. As now, it was the cool season, and she remembers the "freezing cold" (Maybe 15C?); she's from Yangon.

I will leap from that hilltop across the river and over the rice paddies back to Yangon.

Dawn, New Year's day, 2009.
The Shwedagon Pagoda (ရွှေတိဂုံဘုရား), a pilgrimage site since the 8th C. People walk around it, or sit and chant or meditate - or just have a family picnic in a quiet corner.
A sublime and precious place.

If your feet hurt hitting pavement you can take the Metro to Mundet station to get here. Or walk to here and take the Metro back to your hotel for the night and start afresh the next day.

This shows the Mundet station at bottom center and towards the top a red pin shows the location of my photo and the yellow arrows.

You are more than welcome. As the result of a decision taken on camino (aren't the best ones?) we ended up working in Yangon as volunteers from 2016 to 2017. We were lucky, during that brief period of hope before the door was slammed shut in their face, we were able to travel around Myanmar - as I remarked in another recent post, 'the nicest people often have the nastiest government', they also seem to live in the most beautiful places.

We also ate there after our first Camino in 2014. Not knowing how we would get on walking the Camino, we didn't plan to walk to Finisterre and Muxia but we spent three days in Finisterre before we flew home after the Camino. While there we ate somewhere different each evening and this restaurant was recommended to us by locals. Don't have any photos of it though, unfortunately.

Thank you, @dick bird for reminding me of Soutar. Where had he been, I wonder, to know about reemlin heat? You picked a right good poem that captures many a similar type of village along the many caminos.

Continuing our daily dose of camino magic.
Some of us are already walking, while others of us are still long from being able to put our shoes on an actual camino.
Until we can all walk in person, please join us in the fun of sharing a single daily photographic memory of the camino. It's been a real joy to see the camino through so many eyes!

I just dare you to tell me I've got too much in my backpack.
I wouldn't say that but couldn't you have found a smaller shell?

Here's the colorful mess I was carrying on my autumn Catalan/Aragonese:
IMG_20191028_142954-01.jpeg

A green 25 liter pack I bought 20 years earlier as a day pack, a blue lumbar pack that came free with a magazine subscription, a yellow microfiber towel hung out to dry, a found orange nylon shopping bag to hold snacks and make me more visible and a transparent pouch to hold a shell and a credencial. Not shown is a red shafted walking stick strapped to the far side of the pack. I got that when it occurred to me to ask at Monserrat if they had any poles left behind from Camino Ignacio pilgrims. I left that behind at an albergue at the CF entrance to Pamplona.
