the rain, pilgrim. I know you are pious enough.
Matter of fact, you’re already on my A-list.
Why don’t you go on home and pour
yourself a cold one.”
After this unsolicited outburst the llama
shape-shifted into a ram goat with slits
for eyes and serpentine horns and gradually
faded from view
leaving a slight scent of sulfur behind.
Staring down the road and up into rain-sodden
clouds, I mumbled some fragments of prayers
vaguely recalled from childhood sunday school classes,
and trudged on.
