Over Organized Woman's Packing List!

Future Fall 2015
Okay, I'm ready for ALL (well maybe not ALL :)) feedback on my packing list. I've read the forum on "all things equipment" for over a year. I've tested all my gear and I've been hiking with this weight (or more) for over a year, in all weather and all terrains. I'm mid 50s with arthritis in both knees, I SHOULD weigh about 135 but have 30# more on my frame :(. I been told I'm "freaky strong for a woman" by my trainer. My pack seems light to me and I don't even notice it, even at the end of a long hike.

I'll start on September 9th from St Jean and finish in Santiago, God willing, on 10/19--40 days! (Think tortoise!!!)

My FTSO goal was 25# and I'm at 29#. This does include 1.5L of water and 1# for food.

Note: I've divided this into three categores: 1) What I'm wearing/carrying not in a pack, 2) a waist pack, and 3) my backpack.

Critique away.... THANKS!

Try layering on ALL your tops and your bottoms at once. Then cut back to the amount needed for warmth in September-October. Then if you want, add 1 or 2 items back a tiny bit of consideration for style. Many thin layers are more versatile than a few thick ones.

I read your list, and didn't find egregious items. You say you are comfortable with the weight. So no need to worry.

1. You list a rain jacket at close to a pound. There are lighter ones. Outdoor research makes one that weighs 180g if I remember.

2. You list a fleece at close to a pound. A lighter would probably do.

3. You could probably carry 1L of water or even less. (I walk the first km force drinking close to one liter and carry another in my pack. Have yet to run out)

4. You list what looks like a fairly large number of wipes. A reusable towel or re supply under way might help.

5. I do not see an umbrella. For under 300g (half a pond) you get great protection from rain and sun.

Take care

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
I would not take mascara or deodorant or conditioner as would consider these non essentials. I did not think about or miss deodorant on the Camino Frances. I would not take a Swiss Army knife, although I see that other people do take them. I used my spork to cut an apple and a few other food items and it was fine. We mostly ate in cafes as there were so many of them so did not find ourselves having a picnic very often at all. I took a tiny little handheld torch and was not sorry about this decision. I know a lot of people like headtorches and they can be useful, but they do shine into other people's eyes in an annoying way so I was happy that I did not have one. Overall though I think your list looks good and I think some things are down to personal preference.

Hi there! I thought I was organized with my list, but yours is... impressive! :D

Suggestions to reduce weight:

- You probably don't need that many water bottles. Take one and refill at every stop. 1L of water is more than enough (I did all my Camino with one 0.75L bottle);
- I'm in doubt about the hook for toiletries as well... Is it necessary?
- Don't carry an extra pen and travel journal. IF you need extra, buy along the camino. Same for the lip balm, there are plenty of pharmacies;
- I'd leave the conditioner, travel mask and razor behind. A few days unshaved or with scruffy hair won't junt, but any extra weight does :p You could buy small ones when you reach Santiago, if you still think need them "to recover" after the walk ^^;

Try layering on ALL your tops and your bottoms at once. Then cut back to the amount needed for warmth in September-October.

Yup, if it's cold, you should just layer everything, instead of having specific 'for warmth' or 'for cold' stuff. You may save some weight over there as well. And check if you really need three pants. Probably having 2 will do.

(These are all suggestions, please feel as you think it'll be better for you!)

Great ideas! I borrowed the fleece and it is a bit too heavy. Ughhh, another trip to REI! I do have a lot of wipes...like reusable towel idea. Thanks...

WOW @Jiffie, you're VERY organized - I'm impressed.

lol I thought I was pretty well organised, laying things out on the spare bed weeks before it was time to leave. But I had nothing on this! What you may well find though is that there are things here you decide you really don't need once you are walking, and maybe some other things that you decide you do need. Getting rid of things at a Post Office a week into the journey is a 'rite of passage' for lots of people. I know I did it both times within a week of starting walking in France, even though I thought my list was a 'minimum'. And I think the Post Office at Estella on the Camino Frances does a roaring trade in pilgrim packages!

I've a pair of undergarments that have I've brought along, carried for a week or so and posted back as unnecessary over 5 times now………. they've earned frequent flyer air miles at this stage:oops: So I obviously need help…..but think I'd miss that en route rationalisation-as perhaps it's a metaphor for the process of getting rid of all sorts of unnecessary cX*% !

Not much to add but just an observation, at 51 ounces (3.375#), your backpack is quite heavy for such a small pack. My 45 liter pack weighs 40 ounces (2.5#) and mine is not considered an ultralight pack.

So I have to ask, did you leave the tags on your backpack? Because I can not understand why it weighs so much.

Welcome to the over-prepared club!

If in doubt, leave it out. You can always obtain something you wished you had brought in Spain.

I hope this helps.

New Original Camino Gear Designed Especially with The Modern Peregrino In Mind!
It seems that there is quite a bit of duplication. For example, I am a lip balm junkie and plan to take 2 of them which I think is one more than I need, but it looks like you have 5? I also enjoy journaling and plan to bring one. However, it looks like you are planning to bring 2? I'd also recommend leaving the extra pen behind. I bet you can buy one in Spain if needed. Also, I found the cutest tiny pen at REI. It weighs next to nothing. However, then I found that the tiny Swiss Army Knife has a tiny pen and a tiny flashlight! (This is, however, if you check your bag, which I do not plan to do, so I myself cannot take advantage of these features.) It also seems that you have more clothing than necessary. I think you could pair down a bit there. You have hand sanitizer and hand sanitizer wipes. Is all this sanitizing necessary? Maybe pick one and re-fill along the way if necessary? Maybe just one of the travel mascaras if you wish to bring this luxury. Can your shampoo, conditioner, and deodorant be downsized? I disagree with the folks who say leave the conditioner behind. I personally cannot comb through my hair without it. However, I just found that we have a LUSH Cosmetic shop near my work and it appears that not only do they carry a shampoo bar, but they also carry a conditioning bar. I plan to buy one of each and maybe bringing along 1/4 of a bar of each. I don't think that you will need the emergency mylar blanket since you also have the other clothing/bedding layers for warmth. Nonetheless, I would pick liner or sleep sheet, not both. Leave behind the hooks, suction, clothes line. I am sure you can find toothpaste and tissue in Spain. Lose one bra. I disagree on panties. I plan to bring 3 Patagonia travel pair - very light. Hang any wet items on your pack with the safety pins. :)

Yes, a lot of things come down to personal preference - if you are comfortable going without something, then go for it, otherwise bring it. I would never go without deodorant or conditioner, for example. I may not miss the deodorant, but my companions might ;) And my hair would be like straw after a couple weeks without it and I am not interested in ruining my hair for the sake of saving a few ounces, so it comes with me. OTOH, some people find a headlamp to be necessary - I had one, but I didn't use it once. I didn't take mascara and didn't miss it. But I DID bring a pillow case and loved having it every night.

If you have I Phone w/ Guidebook, Music, Meditations, & Prayers then no need for (any) paper Guide Book,
Journal and Pen. Even less need for Extra Pen & Travel Journal. Take the iPhone and 1 small pen. You can get paper everywhere, write notes on napkins or publicity adds.

Wedding ring - I understand its importance, but something on your finger may be from uncomfortable to dangerous if it rubs against walking pole or gets caught in a strap etc. Also may loose if take off to do the laundry.
Hooks - better safety pins.
Carmex - lip balm or tool? You have several lip balms and Swiss knife.
Emergency Mylar Blanket - only to rustle and annoy others.
Stuff Sack everywhere, bags, baggies, Plastic Container for Food, Market Bag - bit too much. Just a few plastic shopping bags. One for all clothes, one to grab for shower, one to put your waist bag with documents in while in shower. Consider IKEA bag clip to secure the anti - water bag.
Sleeping gear - no sleeping bag?
Way too many tops/shirts.
Soap/Shampoo/Laundry Bar and Conditioner - check out LUSH, they have dry shampoo and dry conditioner, very economical and lightweight, easy to pack. I had separate shampoo, conditioner (Lush), soap, and laundry soap (other).
Travel Mascara - to get the fashionable Panda look? :))))) What about permanent tinting of lashes? And brows, if you need. They will get very light in the sun. I used Lush tinted lip balm for lips and for make up (blush and lighter part of eye shadow) + darker eye shadow pencil. And gellish polish on the nails + small bottle of the same color for "updating the roots".
Suction Cup & Hook for Toiletry Bag - no need, put it all on the ground. Not even always a place for them.
Clothesline - paracord, about 5 m was fine.
Safety Pins (20) in Baggie - just safety pins, no baggie. Les hassle if they are on a strap or mesh on the waistpack. You will carry it with you always, including when you hang the laundry.
Mesh Bag for hanging wet items on back pack - they will not dry in a bag, use the pins and fasten them like on a clothesline.
hand sanitizer and hand sanitizer wipes - too much. Plenty of possibilities to wash your hands traditionally, with water and soap.

I did not think about or miss deodorant on the Camino Frances
No, others did!

I agree with Seahorse that there are too many 'bags' and 'recipients'. I know it helps organizing, but try to use the divisions of your backpack, or cases that already carry something else (glasses, camera...)

If it rains, protect yourself and the backpack and everything will be protected. For wet stuff, pin it to the backpack to let it dry.

Ah, and what are the batteries for?

(I really worry about weight... My husband and I had the minimum necessary and did CF well with a 10kg and a 4.5kg backpack respectively - 22 and 10 pounds)

What do the acronyms FTSO and FSO stand for? A search reveals some pretty disgusting possibilities that are probably not your intention! I remain puzzled. Thanks.

FTSO=From The Skin Out. FSO=From Skin Out. This is a way to measure all the weight you are carrying including what you are wearing and what you have in your pack/purse/pockets etc.

Jiffie, I will be two days ahead of you (when we leave anyway) Say hi as you go by! I will have a forum patch on the back of my pack but am more recognizable by my gray handlebar moustache.

Mike

It's not just the weight that is a concern. It's also the bulk of unnecessary items that you are not using that are in the way. You will be packing and unpacking constantly so the fewer items you have the easier it is. Your fellow pilgrims will thank you as you rummage around in the morning.

And please don't use a headlamp when getting ready. I was nearly blinded a few times. In fact unless you plan to hike in the dark, leave it at home. Ditch the emergency blanket. Don't bring "extra" anything. Really. There are many stores along the way and you probably won't even need them.

Btw, I have the same pack and loved it.
Buen Camino!

Hi Jiffie,

I've walked the Frances last year in October and this year in April/May. Believe it or not October was warmer than most of the weather I saw in the spring, so maybe rethink your heavier clothing and just ensure you have enough to layer for hot days and cool mornings/evenings; my guess is that really cold days will be few and far between. I agree with Anamya that you don't need all the tops.

Lose the mylar blanket - most of the albergues have extra blankets, and it'll be warm enough when you go anyways. Get rid of the suction cup for toiletry bag - just bring a bag that dries easily if it does get wet. Most places have hooks or a shelf.

I preferred having many stuff sacks to organize the bag, so wholeheartedly approve of that choice. I do think extras of toiletries (or anything including journal, pen, batteries!) can be purchased along the way (you pass at least one pharmacy every day, so use that to stock up as necessary - you'll only need to do that once or twice if you're using travel size soap/shampoo/conditioner). I preferred having a razor as well, and approve, especially if your legs will be bare for most of the hike.

If it rains a lot, the mascara might be more trouble than it's worth. The girls I traveled with liked to have a lipstick and a small vial of perfume to freshen up at the end of the day; I didn't bring anything, but wouldn't have minded the perfume towards the end :)

The wise pilgrim app is very very good - I barely referenced the Brierly book that I had and tended to prefer the app for planning.

My opinion is that 1L of water is fine for most days, but there are a few days (the Mezeta, the Roman Road) where the water stops are much further apart, where you might want to grab another water bottle. There are lots of options to do so on the road though.

Buen Camino!

THANKS!

Jiffie, I see where you say you've been training with this much weight for over a year. Have you done consecutive multiple day walks, say for six hours a day for six days in a row?

The Camino takes an unexpected toll on the body, and while you can walk with 29 lbs. for one or two days a week, it will ruin those arthritic knees when you try to do it for 40 days on the Camino. I've been leading groups on the Camino for the past two years, and from what I've seen, carrying too much weight is the number one cause of injuries - specifically blisters and tendonitis, which can put you on the bench for a few days.

For your own enjoyment, you may want to seriously reduce your total weight, with a goal of 10% of your ideal body weight. Just with a quick look, it looks like you can cut back considerably on the weight of clothes and those 'Extra Supplies.' General rule of thumb: no extras, carry only things you will use every day, with the only exceptions being your waterproofs and first aid kit.

Remember...ounces turn into pounds, and pounds will piss you off!

Hope to see you on the trail!

~ Nancy

I salute your ambition and organizational skills. Now realistically you will not be alone, while sharing should be a part of everyones life and Camino you will find this community will help when needed and so you will need less. 1. Separate your bag into waterproof light weight bags (different colors help) now ditch the rain cover for your pack, 2. Save the pen ditch the journal, write in the back of Brierley's guide, better is to
bring John's maps and photograph the important items with your Phone/camera. 3. Bring the wipes and leave the Kleenex/container, Hand sanitizer wipes, 4. It rains in Spain learn to love a hat, I now love mine as ugly and goofy as I thought it was. 5. Ship the Mascara, dress clothes, nail clippers and tweezers, Fitbit and charger(you will know when your tired). 6. Leave at home, Milar blanket, silk travelers sheets, 4 Eagle Creek half cubes, clothesline, suction cups, Swiss Army Knife, Spork, 10 safety pins.
Now like others have suggested wear all the clothes in layers and bring the two sets you need. Your dress clothes will be waiting for you and your back and feet will thank you for packing lighter....... Buen Camino... Willy

Don't ditch the conditioner!
Totally agree on the conditioner...ruined my hair on my first camino...hard water turns hair into straw! My one luxury is a good hair conditioner.

Agree. Except about clothesline (was useful), knife (really no picnics with store bought food?), and 10 pins (had 20, used all at same time).

Fitbit USB Charging Cord 0.30

Ditch the FitBit. It will weigh heavily on you as concerns your experience if not the weight in your pack. You're hopefully not going over there for the purpose of counting steps. Instead count the number of conversations you have with total strangers. Count the number of 13th century edifices. Count poppies growing in wheat fields. (Good luck with that.) Count "¡Buen Caminos!" (Good luck with that too.) Count the number of shared trail lunches. Count storks. Count anything but steps!

I still can't understand people who claim that [any kind of] information spoils the Camino experience. Still its true that you don't need a special device for counting steps. Download an app for your smartphone, there are many different ones, choose whichever you like.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

While I agree that the FitBit information is NOT key to the Camino in any way, it is no harm.

I use a FitBit daily. Just this year used it on my hike across England and on 2 hikes in the mountains of North Carolina. I review the data AFTER the day ends, sometimes not even that often, sometimes a couple times a day, but the information is NOT central to my hiking, it does NOT get in the way of my interactions with people, it does NOT prevent me from appreciating the birds, the architecture, the other hikers, etc.

FitBits are passive counters, they give you an idea of what you did, but they don't define your experience.

Hi do you need 2 watch thingie's for fitness and measurement. there is an app you can get on your phone that does the same job. I took only my watch for time and measured distance and health things on phone - pacer. ( reduce weight helps a lot mentally and physically. do you have a light weight towel as couldn't see one?

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Haha, I love it...I did exactly the same but my training sessions certainly helped me cut down on the excess, I even bought a small set of scales to weigh items in shops before I bought them.

You will only find out if it works for you after you start on the walk 🚶‍♀️

BTW - my pack weight, including 1 litre of water was 7kg

Hey! I also had my pack list separated out to individual items with weights of each item! It's a worthwhile exercise. Mine's listed here. I was 3.9kg/8.6lbs pack-base-weight only. Perhaps it will help you to know if any of your individual items are particularly heavy as compared to what is available, perhaps it will help with 'required clothing' considerations (I was en route ~'Sept 6 - Oct 12' so the timeline is similar), perhaps it will help with identifying some items you may not need (I listed literally everything, including my own personal dental retainers....so if it isn't listed, it didn't come along!). Keep in mind that there's LOTS of things you can buy en route, but it is harder to 'throw away' your own possessions (physiologically, loss-aversion, not wasting, etc) - so if you can buy it en route, and aren't sure if you'll need it...start without it! buy as needed). The two items I'm now a complete convert on is trekking poles, and trail-gaiters, and would 100% bring those if I went again.
Buen Camino!
