Oviedo albergue sets a new record

From the period Dec. 2013 through Nov. 2014, 4,423 pilgrims stayed in the Oviedo albergue. Since so many people stay in private accommodation in Oviedo, there are likely many more not captured in those statistics.

In that period there were 31 days in which the albergue was full.

Interesting stats on foreign pilgrims -- 527 French, 327 Italian, 312 German, Americans not mentioned.

With all of that chatting that goes on here, it's easy to think that North Americans are a significant portion of the total numbers isn't it? As a Canadian, who seems to meet hundreds of other Canadians on the camino, and as many Americans, I'm always surprised by the numbers. In actual fact, in 2013, Americans and Canadians represented only 4.69% and 1.56% of the total pilgrims (respectively). I guess it's not surprising we don't always show up in the stats. Interesting, isn't it?

I don't think US pilgrims have found any of the alternate routes in any significant numbers. Everything I see seems focused on the French Way with maybe a little Via de la Plata or Camino Portuguese thrown in.

In my Primitivo I only met one American in Tineo doing it in reverse. Last year on my holidays near Berducedo I met 3 Canadians from Quebec (it was a surprise to me that one lady had an even worse English than mine).

In August and September of last year, we walked the Norte and only met one other American couple and maybe two Canadians. But...as the thread was about numbers, it was much more crowded than I expected on the Norte. Many, many Germans, Dutch, Spanish, Austrians, Italians, etc doing their first Camino on the Norte as they had heard of the crowded conditions on the Frances. Albergues were often full with people turned away at times.
We continued on the Norte but most people turned South on the Primitivo. It was pretty quiet on the Norte after the Primitivo turn. I would guess that adding those who are starting in Oviedo could make a pretty large group.

I am going to walk the Primitivo with my grandsons in late June/early July and then go on to the Portugues after they leave.
