A recent article in La Voz de Galicia: Los primeros 1.551 test de covid en el aeropuerto de Santiago arrojaron un positivo en 43 días

I don't think that this is of any use to international travellers who will depart from Spain. In January, Aena announced that they had concluded a contract for PCR testing centres for departing travellers in a number of airports but Santiago was not among them. They said that the contract was for six months, with an option for a prolongation until the 31st of December. Who knows what requirements for travelling will be like in even a month or two.

Can anyone clarify If a test is needed before entering the UK again(UK citizen).
Also after reading another article, it says another test is needed to be taken on day two? Do you book and take that test at home airport or before you enter the UK again.

The gov.uk website says 1 test in the 72hours before departure from an amber zone country 1 test 2 days after return & 1 test 8 days after return with 10 days quarantine. This may change so keep checking

I don’t really know more that what is in the paper:

It is done by Sergas (public health). It looks to me that you just show up and get a test, but I don’t know.

I did the Primitivo last year. That was the first camino. Now I am planning to do the camino again, again the Primitivo but this time solo. My very first time to do the camino solo
I think they do fast antigen test (Rapid antigen test - Wikipedia) at the airport. Not PCR (as far as I know).
Ivar,

I am thoroughly confused:

Do I need a PCR test to fly back or just the antigen?
And If I only need the antigen, can I do this at the airport?
Also I am flying to another EU country

I read that the tests are 120/160 euro. Is this possible? It seems like a huge amount of money

Please shed some light

Thank you

Elena

This is a service for you to use if the country you are going to request this test. I don't know what each country requires, so you need to check with the country you are going to.

This will get easier once the COVID passport comes out I think.

Hi Elena,
It really all depends on where you're flying and what they require for you upon arrival. Some countries may accept an antigen test, but it seems like most require a PCR test. Going through another EU country as well - it depends on what your destination country mandates for you as far as transferring through another country before landing. For example, if I remember correctly, the US CDC requires that your PCR test be within 72 hours of the flight that actually takes you back to US soil.

EDIT: I just read the CDC site again and the test needs to be taken before the first (not the last) flight on your journey to the US...however, some conditions apply.

I'd check with the official govt websites for what they'll require of you, as the Forum is limited in the kind of accurate information it can give you for your situation.

As far as the cost, I've seen anywhere from 90€ with an Iberia Airlines-sponsored discount, up to 160€. Since it's an elective test needed for traveling, the labs can charge what they need to....but yes, it's pricey! (On the other hand, if you were showing symptoms, the Spanish government usually gives a free test.)

Elena, I think you need to check with your own embassy to answer that quesrtion. To return back to your country, if you are from the USA, an antigen test appears to be acceptable NOW! But in 3 months...who knows? If from the USA check with CDC website and your airline.

Right now, according to @ivar you can obtain an antigen test at SCQ airport. However, there does not appear to currently be appointment times...so I would personally be uncomfortable to attempt to obtain a test that was not scheduled the same day I was flying back.

I will be flying back to the Italy which is part of the EU as Spain. I keep getting contrasting information. I hope that the antigen test is enough, I am just trying to a) figure out was it is required b) book the test or go to the airport as the case might be c) book the return flight (I already got the one to Spain)

2) Travel from Spain to Italy required antigenic test

I purchased travel insurance last november that had covid coverage for 5 million , the cost was similar to the previous years purchase price. The other part of the travel problem that no one has mentioned and i have a problem with is the physical exam , preformed usually at the doctors office. It is required to purchase travel insurance at least every 2 years. Five years back my doctor had retired and i had a problem getting squeezed into my new doctors schedule. Since then i have made it an annual event to prevent any problems with my travel insurance renewells. Last year when i returned from a winter stay in Florida the doctors office cancelled my appointment because of the covid situation . I was fortunate that i had recd one the previous year so i was still eligible to purchase my winter travel insurance policy this past november. When i returned to Canada 3 weeks ago i called to see if a physical would be a possibility this summer and was told that it was not. So the hunt continues for any doctor who would be willing to provide this necessary examination. I wonder how others are dealing with this situation.

It is a huge amount of money, Elena. We are a captive audience. I recall last year when the tests were developed, I read about an airport in Europe that had created its own testing location--at a cost of about 50 euro--and that was with a new product on the market!
But as Ivar says, things will change when the vaccination passport is in play. And if the number of cases continues to decrease.
I would imagine if you are traveling now, this won't help you.

I had a pre travel PCR test April 28 in the United States. The Cost was 189.00. I suspect they will increase in price. Another thing to remember with these tests is they were only available 6 days a week, not on Sunday . This can make a Tuesday departure a sticky situation. They have a shelf life of 72 hrs as far as the airlines are concerned for international travel.

Am I understanding you correctly, Traveller44, that in Canada one must have a physical exam every 2 years in order to purchase travel insurance? Is this private insurance or something you may purchase through your national health?
And secondly, are you saying that your health care provider's office is so busy that you cannot get an appointment fro April through the summer?
Of course, in the US, it is different. Private travel insurance is expensive the older you get. They exclude preexisting conditions, but do not require physicals.
Every place is different I imagine.

The requirement to have a physical every 2 years is required by the travel insurance provider. I am not sure if this is to reduce their payouts or to be able to increase premiums depending on your results. Or both. This is for travel insurance purchases through privately, non government owned companies. Secondly there is a third wave of covid currently, in canada , any appointments with your general practitioner are done on the phone. Most are not seeing patients for general issues like physicals and if you have a condition that requires a doctor in person, they refer you to the emergency room.

Interesting the way it works to be sure. In Canada when I renew my travel insurance I am entitled to any number of trips with no preconditions as long as they are 40 days or less, but they make up for it by what they charge extra for trips longer than 40 days where preconditions do apply.

It is a lot of money 😟
Here in US, so far, from what I can see, it's about$200.00-250.00 depending on the airport
United Airlines took it a step further and offers you a self-administed kit. So you take that with you, then 1 day before flying home you "do whatever" (apparently an access to the laptop or tablet required) and you get results in 20 minutes which you can download into a given app
$150.00 for that joy of happiness 😳😠🤬

I should have written that it is a question among other health related questions on the application for all of the companies that I have purchased travel insurance from over the years. My understanding is the price of your policy is determined by your answers. I am so glad you replied because now I realize I may be able to purchase a new policy even if I can't secure an appointment for a physical exam with my General Practitioner. I will pay more to the insurance company for my renewal policy , but i don't have to stress about it.

You know what, I am staying at home much as I want to be on my way to Santiago. I had to take a test because someone I was close to was close to someone who had it. I was negative but I would not voluntarily do that test again and then pay for it. I found it very uncomfortable to do. Makes me wonder why I went to the bother of getting vacinated

I believe the test that UA is offering is the quick antigen Test not a PCR. It seems pricey at 150 bucks.-even for United.

Nevertheless,if anyone uses it soon can you PM me so I can see how smoothly the process worked? Thanks!

Well upon further reading, I will pass on buying ahomekit. Why?
We are walking early Sept.

The manufacturer of the BinaxNOW COVID-19 Ag Card Home Test Kit recommends test kits be stored at temperatures between 2 and 30°C (35.6 - 86°F). Any extended exposure of the test kit to temperatures beyond this range may effect quality of test results.

There is no way I can guarantee the kit won’t be-
exposed to higher temperatures over my time on the Camino.
So I will get the test at the airport

The PCR test , especially the throat swab can be somewhat uncomfortable but test itself is over in less than thirty sec.The noseswab is not that bad, only a mild itchy feeling when test is performed.
The last year I had four of them ( for workreasons ) and all in all perfectly doable.
I can only conclude that the labtechnician who performed your test was maybe less experienced?

Interesting , how do they process the results so quickly?
It is technically like a home kit.....you take it with you on the trip, then when you take the test yourself...and you get on the internet-and a med-tech verifies your results..and clears you to travel.

It sounds like you have "the best of both"! We rent a place in Gulf Shores for January & February to leave cold weather. I assume it is your reason to own a place in Florida, but I assume you are Canadian and must abide by whatever rules/laws are in effect regarding travel during times of covid since 2020.

The PCR test , especially the throat swab can be somewhat uncomfortable but test itself is over in less than thirty sec.The noseswab is not that bad, only a mild itchy feeling when test is performed.
The last year I had four of them ( for workreasons ) and all in all perfectly doable.
I can only conclude that the labtechnician who performed your test was maybe less experienced?
very very inexperienced. it was a home test lol😂😂😂😂

CAUTION. United-and now American airlines offering this kit. However I will be walking the Camino in September when it could be quite hot!

I see that previous folks point out that this test needs to be kept at cool-ish temperatures, and a Camino in July will not be cool enough! Hoping for the airport, but looking at the list of clinics as well . . .

I will fly into MAD the day before returning to USA. You can get a Rapid antigen test by appointment for less than 25 euros without having to slug a kit around or mail it, pick it up etc. Right now can only schedule 3 months ahead.

THIS is excellent! I have booked an antigen test (E24,45) for re-entry into USA. I chose a time slot at three hours before my departure time. They are located in T4 on the second floor. Must have boarding pass to enter this area. Thanks so much for finding this, @Marbe2 !

I can't see the link, but make sure it is not a 'send off' and that the results are somehow linked to your account like the Binax. The article referenced above states the cheaper tests may not be CDC approved for travel, just for inhome personal use. https://www.afar.com/magazine/cdc-approves-at-home-covid-tests-for-international-travel

Now that my return flight to Canada is from Madrid, with a change in Frankfurt, I have discovered that my return flight does not give me sufficient time to get a covid test, wait for results, and fly back to Canada, with a transfer in Frankfurt. The 72 hour limit since testing makes this impossible to do in Santiago, then travel to Madrid to get my flight. And my departure from Madrid on a Monday, when everything is closed up tight in Spain on weekends (some possible weekend openings in Madrid) will not permit me to get a test in Madrid and get results before my flight. Also, many of the clinics which offer fast testing only process spit tests, rather than the required nasopharyngeal test. Tentative plan: when I approach Santiago, check what the current covid requirements are for fully vaccinated travellers. If there are no additional requirements for travellers who are fully vaccinated in Frankfurt Airport or for arrival in Canada, keep my current schedule. Otherwise, I shall have to travel to Madrid a couple of days sooner with arrangements made in advance with one of the few clinics open on weekends. I never imagined that this could be made so complicated.

I am waiting longer as I am not willing to jump through so many hoops and instead have a few trips lined up in my own country for the time being. I will be eager to hear how many of you who get to actually "go" first manage, and I hope to hear positive outcomes with reports.
All the best to you!

Thinking aloud:
I take it that "You must deliver it to a U.S. address before your trip" means the kit must be delivered to a US address before we leave the country, and we get to lug it around for the whole of our travels. Why won't the airlines let us instead pick up the kit at the airport?
Does it say how much the kit costs? Surely they are not offering us kits included in the price of a ticket.
Is the requirement at this point for US entry a PCR or an antigen test, and which is this test kit?
Where do we send it to get the result or is it a home kit (like its name says) where we test ourselves, but then how do they know it is a true result? Are we video taping us take the test to prove it is accurate?
Turn-around time?
There must be some official form the company will print out for us--there was that case of a woman in San Francisco last month where the clinic wrote in long hand the results of her antigen test on a pre-printed form, and the airlines wouldn't take it because they and the country of destination required both the form and the results be printed out.
Where I live (US) there is a company that will send me an antigen test kit (my state will pay for test and testing) to send back to the company for results, and they have a warning that if I send them the sample from overseas, it would not be free, but cost me about $130. Since sending it back to the US would take longer than the 72 hour limit, it wouldn't make sense to do so anyway.
I suppose I will need to check out the websites. Darn.

Just so. After I bought my ticket (January 2021 when I was feeling hopeful), it occurred to me that I would be doing 5 tests to be in compliance. Things have softened since then and maybe at the moment it is 3 tests. And I am continuing to hope that by October nothing reverses, and they actually drop all testing!!😉

👋 I have a question for those based in SdC please. Where can I get a PCR test in SdC on a weekend? The websites of those listed in this post all seem Monday to Friday and even then, very few hours worked. Reason is, a flight on Monday at 1900 out of SdC means a test on Friday is outside the 72 hour window required by UK on reentry. Many thanks in advance.

Hi Robert and welcome to the Forum!
It is a hard reality that none of the clinics are open on the weekends. However, the UK is like the USA, where they require a test "3 days" before your departure, and not a strict 72 hours. You may want to make sure in this current moment, but if that's the case, then a test on Friday is 3 days from Monday, even if it's not strictly within a 72-hour window. I took my PCR test at 1pm on a Monday, and flew to the UK (to transit elsewhere) at 5pm on a Thursday. No problems at all in the UK.

This was the website I referenced to make sure my PCR test would be OK.

"You must take the test in the 3 days before the service on which you will arrive in England departs."

This page was last updated June 25, 2021. There's another webpage that I found floating around that said that all international passengers needed to have a negative Covid test that had been performed within 72 hours before boarding...but that page was from January 2021.

I shall have a similar problem for my return to Canada. Regulations there are complex and strict about where, and when, and what type of test one must have before flying to Canada. The test must be not more than 72 hours before the scheduled departure of the final flight which is bringing a passenger to Canada. My flight is transiting in Frankfurt. Fortunately, I have found that I fly on a Monday, so my test can be on the previous Friday. I have found a location where I can take the test and they are agreeable to sending the results to me electronically. But will such a test, taken late on a Friday to correspond the the take-off time of my flight from Frankfurt on the following Monday, be processed over the weekend? My only real hope is that these rigid regulations will no longer exist when I am flying back to Canada in late November. Otherwise, I could be stranded in Frankfurt,if the staff on the flight to Canada refused to let me board.

My suggestion is to make your COVID PCR test appointment as soon as you KNOW when you will be at Santiago. It argues in favor of staying a few days - so you can get your results. I suggest a morning appointment for the test.

My research indicates that next-day results are likely. But, you need to confirm this directly.

If you will be traveling from east-to-west to return home, say from Spain to Canada or the US, you actually arrive only a few hours after you left. So the 3-day or 72-hour thing is assisted by the 6-hour time difference from the US/CN East Coast Time Zone. At least that's the way I see it.

I will be departing Santiago to return home on Thursday, 23 September. I plan to make an appointment to get a test on Tuesday morning. Hopefully, I will have the results on Wednesday. My departure flight from Santiago to Madrid to connect to my US-bound flight is Thursday - late morning, so I could make a taxi run to the clinic, then to the airport, if needs must. I set it up expressly for that purpose.

Worst case - I get "stuck" at Santiago, LOL. Best case, it all goes according to plan and I get home without problems.

But, and I cannot understate this, you have to do your research and PLAN accordingly.

I hope this helps.

Ola,

My daughter and I are planning to walk part of the Camino Frances starting in late May or early June. Tentatively we are planning to start in Leon and continue walking to Finisterre after a couple days in Santiago.

Afterwards, my wife will fly over and we will have a mini European vacation.

We have lots of questions but we have already learned a lot just from reading the posts on this board. One thing though, we are curious about the food. What did people like and not like?

Buen Camino,
The fare in Spain is excellent , mostly fresh and wholesome . They general spent long time at the table talking and enjoying their dishes . Most places on the Camino have cafes and albergues have a “ menu de perigrino” which is exclusively for walkers with a “ credential” that has 3 courses , bread , wine & desert for about 10-11 euros. Did I mention the coffee is excellent

From the list above, I book an antigen test at the location copied below. It was 45 euro. I waited about 45 minutes after my appointment time, and the results took an hour rather than fifteen minutes, but all went well and I was able to reenter the U.S. with the documentation they gave me. I booked online the day before.

Does anyone have any idea why there would be no appointments available for the entire first week of October at this location in Santiago?

I also saw that flights from Santiago to Madrid on October 8 had spiked much higher than the surrounding days (difference was around 40 euros for other days and 200 on October 8). So I am wondering if there’s something going on that would cause these two things. Or just my bad luck!

Well, the eight of October is on a Friday , beginning of a long weekend ( puente on the Monday most pobably) seeing the Dia de la Hispanidad is on the 12th of October and a national holiday.
So I guess lots of Spaniards will be having a holiday and/ or flying to meet relatives.

Yeah. I bet there's a puente ahead of the national holiday on the 12th. That may explain the Quirón lack of available appointments, although I'm surprised by that, since traveling domestically (which many Spaniards will do) doesn't necessitate a PCR test. But it's likely that many people will be traveling internationally - anything is possible this year! :D

The free market and technology are providing solutions.

For UK travellers there’s a remote-access option for ‘return home’ testing with ‘breathe assured’ (there will be others …) which allows for the required test to be performed anywhere in the world and certified.

One takes the required test kit with you and perform the test on yourself, whilst on a live zoom call with a certified clinician. The test result is certified electronically within the hour.

I have an associate who used the service last week to return home from Spain and it was very simple.

I have no commercial interest in the business and cannot explain further, but the details are here:

I contacted all of the labs listed by @SYates above and found two that will conduct covid tests with results given in a short time frame. One of the labs, Quirón Prevención, looks like a big operation but for some reason they seem to be closed during the week of Oct. 4.

Laboratorio Jacobo de Soto — antigen test for 50€, results in one hour

Life Clinic — no antigen tests, PCR test 90€. Results by 3 pm on the day following the test.

Tests at the Madrid airport are about half those prices.

I'm flying back to the UK on 17th August from Santander (after a week walking a section of the Norte). I don't suppose anyone can advise on best way to test for my return given that I will be somewhere like Gijon the day before and on the bus to Santander on the morning of my flight?
I've just looked at the company recommended above by @henrythedog but wondered if there is another way? Not getting anywhere in this regard with the .gov.uk website or my lovely airline Ryanair :(
Is there any chance there are rapid tests at Santander airport?

To my knowledge, the only airports with testing centers are Sevilla, Málaga, and Madrid.

Just a quick google of “covid testing Gijón” brought up a bunch of options. This is one instance in which my own inclination would be to make sure I knew where I was going to be on that day (planning to get there by bus if need be) and reserve a test slot in one of the clinics. Leaving it un-scheduled and hoping to find a slot on the day you walk into whatever city you walk into would be beyond my risk tolerance. I believe that pilgrims arriving in Santiago are finding it hard to get a test on the day they arrive without an appointment having been scheduled earlier. Places like Gijón may not have that pressure, but I still think that walking into Gijón and then having to locate a place with an open test slot could be pretty stressful.

I have also been looking at how I get my test before flying back to the UK and if you live in the UK you will find these links useful.

It looks like my best option is to register for a kit to be sent to me before I leave the UK, then do the test before departing Spain, get the results online within an hour. (all going well)

Everyone on these lists have been accredited by the UK Government either to do the test before returning to the UK (remotely) or/as well as the day 2/8 test on return.

Thanks. New links I couldn't find earlier!
I've now decided to go with Breathe Assured - the fact you can get the test approved via a zoom link appeals to me. I got the impression merely carrying out your own test and getting a result was not enough, you need some sort of certification to show the airline. But I could be wrong. It's been a confusing few hours!
And it means I'm not tied down to have to be in a certain place as long as I have wifi to make the zoom call at the pre-arranged appointment time.
Fingers crossed this will be accepted at Santander airport. I find the lack of guidance from the government on this quite alarming though.

You can also get tested for free at the Faculty of Pharmacy where the Galician government set up a covid test and vaccination centre.

I have two sets of friends who used that service in the past two weeks and it worked well. If it’s still required when I’m next booked to fly in October, I will use them.

Can anyone clarify If a test is needed before entering the UK again(UK citizen).
Also after reading another article, it says another test is needed to be taken on day two? Do you book and take that test at home airport or before you enter the UK again.
We took a test prior to the flight and booked one for day 2 of our arrival in UK. You have to show proof of that before you fly.

If my reading of the BBC is correct I think that the ‘return to UK’ test from Spain has now to be a PCR test, not lateral flow, which rules out the ‘breathe assured’ offering. 0 The BBC say the Government now ‘advise’ that, which is about as clear as mud.

(updated: as is so often the case in the UK this appears to be as clear as mud. From Sunday a PCR is ‘advised’ to return to the UK from Spain - but the nature of test is not mandated, just the specificity of the test. Do your own research!)

The gov.uk website says 1 test in the 72hours before departure from an amber zone country 1 test 2 days after return & 1 test 8 days after return with 10 days quarantine. This may change so keep checking
I think it has changed… (or at least I hope I got this right ,
I’m flying back tomorrow 😂).
0ne test before you fly. - so you have the result when you do fly - and then another on day 2 of your arrival. You have to show proof you have booked it.
No quarantine now needed, nor 3rd test (to reduce quarantine to 5 days instead of 10).
Fingers crossed folks 😳
PS Actually I wouldn’t mind in the slightest if I had got it wrong and they refused me entry 😉😅😉

Edit: The above only applies if you’ve been double-jabbed! Sorry, quite important 😳

Oh and my hussband reminds me (because he spent all day doing it 😂) you also have to fill-in a passenger locator form.

Something I have just found out and may be of help when you fly back: the ‘day 2 ‘ test can in fact be taken in the airport when you arrive!
Saves you a trip on the actual day 2 😁
Wish I had known that at the time 🙄

I am confused (easily done). If I take a test in Spain, say the day before I board a flight back to UK, then arrive at Heathrow in a few hours, why would taking the test upon my arrival at Heathrow count as the said Day 2 test?

i too was confused but apparently the ‘day 2’ test can be taken within 2 days…That is what was explained to me by a friend who’s just flown back to the UK…and did the test on arrival.

Here is an update on my wife's experience on here Camino in August 2021.

The bad news:
While the listing is good, we found it difficult to make an appointment ahead of time and the clinics seemed to predominantly open weekdays only and some 10:00 to 12:30.

The good news:
Her hotel was able to book her an appointment at:
Clinica Gaias, Rua Xaime Quesada, 2-4 Baixo, 15702 Santiago de Compostela. +34 981 566 801
Her appointment was at 18:50 so well within ETA expectation to arrive and test the same day
The SARS - Antigen test more than meets the UK requirement at 1/3 the price of a PCR test
Sensitivity 96.73% / Specificity 99.2% / Accuracy 98.74%
Results back in under 20 minutes

For UK travellers
- we found the online locator form snaggy, though I eventually managed to get it done. Beware travelling back Monday / Tuesday - it leaves little scope for contacting anyone over the weekend if you have a problem. Make sure you meet the immigration requirements for UK - Santiago passenger handling does turn away passengers that do not fulfil the criteria
