I am looking for some advice on how many of you have managed your pictures on the Camino.
I am planning to carry a Canon digital camera, an iphone 4 with a Spanish SIM, an Eyefi SD card that will wirelessly transfer my pictures to my phone and I have a Flickr Pro account. I hope to take many thousands of pictures and want to both back them up, and have them available to use on our blog.

The Eyefi card will automatically transfer all my pictures to the iphone, but I know the space on the iPhone is not enough to hold many of the photos. Eyefi does not connect to public wifis directly to allow for a transfer to Flickr. And waiting to use the public computers to transfer my pictures took along time last Camino and cost Euros as you sat and waited for the uploads.

Perfect world, I would like the pictures to transfer to the iphone and they get automatically loaded to Flickr and then removed from my phone. But I am afraid this will not work and will only fill up the phone and cause it to freeze up.

What have you all found to work the best?

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
I'm an idiot when it comes to photos, but I have Dropbox which seems to pick up all my photos. Is that the same as Flickr?

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
There is a Flickr app for iphone which should auto upload your photos. See more in Flickr help here.
The Flickr app does allow for auto upload. At this point this may be my best option, but with only 5GBs free on the phone, I am afraid I will spend more time deleting pictures from the phone to load more. I wish I could just get the SD card to automatically connect to a wifi and load from there, but Eyefi does not support public wifis, only your private one.

Do wifi cameras allow direct upload to Flickr? It may be worth getting a different camera...

Thanks.

I think Dropbox just stores the files for you and can be accessed virtually. Flickr is more of a social media site for pictures.
If Dropbox can be set us to move pictures from a phone to Dropbox and not leave the file on the phone, that would work for me. I would just start the process when I was in a wifi location.

I'm not sure if it does have this property, but I'll investigate. Thanks!

The 9th edition the Lightfoot Guide will let you complete the journey your way.
Dropbox´ app for iPhone syncronize iPhone photostream once you open the Dropbox-app. That means you are free to manage uploading once you are in a wifi-zone. It´s extremely easy to use

The issue I am trying to address is not making the iPhone a surrogate repository for the photos (because it is limited in space). I am having to use the iPhone as a "pass through" to Flickr. Anything that is "synchronizing" will not work because it means all the pictures will have to stay on the phone. There is not enough space for that.

Little more precise from me....no problem to delete pictures on iPhone, photos will not be deleted on Dropbox.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Jonas:
Thanks for this. It looks like both Dropbox and the Flickr app with load these from the iPhone. Eyefi will load them on the iphone. I will carry my usb/sd connector as a backup to use public computers to load up all the photos where possible.
It is not clean, but it will work.

Whatever app you decide to use, just ensure the app does not alter the spec of the original image. Some by default will reduce the image size and the case of raw images convert these to jpegs

Here are the image spec supported by Flickr - you will notice if you are shooting in Raw or Tiff, these images will be converted to jpegs!
....

With a Flickr account, you can upload photos up to 200MB in size, or videos of up to 1GB for each video. For more on video files and types supported, please visit the Video FAQ

Flickr officially supports JPEGs, non-animated GIFs, and PNGs. You can also upload TIFFs and some other file types, but they will automatically be converted to and stored in JPEG format.

As you publish photos, they're compressed and resized by Flickr (if necessary) in the following sizes:

  • 75x75 pixels square
  • 150x150 pixels square
  • 100 pixels (on the longest side)
  • 240 pixels
  • 320 pixels
  • 500 pixels
  • 800 pixels *
  • Large (which will be 1024 pixels if it exceeds that length)
  • 1600 pixels *
  • 2048 pixels *
  • The original size

Apparently both Dropbox and Google Drive allow you to upload Raw images to their sites.

@jirit - thanks for the expert advice!

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Usually I find that free wifi speeds in cafes etc are quite slow. Not sure that I would be wanting to rely on it for uploading many photos.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION regarding flickr and the HeartBleed bug.

For those people using flickr to upload photos, please note that this site is one of a number of websites that may have been compromised by the HeartBleed virus or bug. Yahoo.com owns flickr and it too is on the same list.

It's been patched now, so all you have to do is change your Yahoo password. It's not obligatory, but a good thing to do just in case it was compromised before Yahoo was made safe. :)

I too used a Cannon digital, I also took with me a mini iPad and downloaded each evening and of course do not need Wifi, just in case I did not delete the my card's. As soon as I got home they automatically downloaded to my laptop from my iPad, I did take a lot of photos not as many as you though, anywhere from 50 to 500 per day.
The iPad mini was so light and it not a bother to carry.
