Picking Up From Where I Left Off!!

I set off from SJPP last September, and as many before me I went too far too fast and before I knew it after 7 days I had reached the end of the 9th day on the Guide Book I was using. I rested a day in Burgos then got back into my Camino. I started getting an ache in my leg which I thought was tendonitis, but it was the beginning of shin splints, which simply got worse. I reached Terradillos de Los Templarios and after sending a photo of my leg to the doctors in my family I was immediately told it could be an infection and I had to go to hospital immediatley, so off I went to Leon by taxi, where tendonitis was (as it turns out misdiagnosed). I rested up for three days and restarted (I was still one day ahead of schedule), but by Molinesca I was limping. So I had to fly the flag and return home to London where I was diagnosed with a stress fracture on my tibia.

I discovered a severe pronation on my right foot was to blame and now have orthotic, I am returning on the 4th April to pick up at Terradillos de Los Templarios (which getting to is a bit of a logistical exercise in itself), walking the three days into Leon, then getting a bus to Molinesca and start out again for Santiago then Muxia. I suspect this part of the route will be much quieter than when I did it in Sept/Oct where there was a race for beds, as it was (I was told) the busiest it had ever been.

I have learned to slow down rest up and take my time, it's not a race and if I need to come back again to finish it due to injury or other factors, I can easily do so. It's not going anywhere.

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

These are words I have used, just yesterday when responding to another suffering Pilgrim whose walk was unkindly stopped in its tracks.

It happened to me too, carrying too much weight in my pack, and on my frame, causing a knotting in my left Illio-tibial band. For me, I have done my best to minimize the making of decisions with the involvement of ego, which, I feel, is the root of all that goes wrong in our lives. Great care must be taken with one's ego. It feeds on excitement, blinds us to the reality of a mountain in front of us. That excitement will hasten us up one side and down the other and the mountain, though still there for others to challenge, has done its damage to us.

Sadly, for some of us, it takes time to find the true pilgrim mind. No clocks, no pedometers, no maps or guide books. But, in this World, everything must be controlled and the more information that can be gathered, the better.

This is the real challenge of every Pilgrim, to come to this realization. Yes, many will be successful in the journey, with young limbs and stout constitutions. As we age, however, we find that there is much more involved and I believe that is the purpose of the many, many, many miles / kilometers, to bring us to this understanding.
