Oh how sad!.. I’m on Camino Frances right now, just before Sarria.. Can anyone tell me from the article where and when this occurred? RIP pilgrim.

Miss J, this happened in Arzua, if you are in Sarria then this happened about three "Brierley Stages" ahead of you. The article is dated May 11th, but the date of death is not listed, plus the article is too confusing--did he died while sleeping or was he found dead on the camino? This information is not found in the article. However, per the article he was found dead by his companions (in an albergue? Again, this is not included in the article). Regardless, we have a dead peregrino and that is a very SAD thing. Wishing YOU and all caminantes currently heading to Santiago de Compostela a buen camino, animo, no pares de caminar.

"He slept in an accommodation in ArzĂşa and his companions found him dead overnight." He died in his sleep. Had he been found on the road this would no doubt have been mentioned.

Rest in peace, peregrino.

That is very sad for the pilgrim and his family and friends. May he rest in peace. Please don't think of me as flippant, that aside it is my "dream" death to die walking one of the caminos and passing away in my sleep, as long as it is not too premature...Beats every other way to die. In my case recurrence of aggressive bladder cancer, family history of breast cancer and stroke, would be awful alternatives....

That is so sad
We were in ArzĂşa on Wednesday night and arrived in Santiago yesterday. So close...but happiness is the journey...
We will pray for him this morning in the cathedral. God bless.

Buen camino, pilgrim. My thoughts are with him, his family and his friends.
Thank you for letting us know, Peter.

My thoughts are with the family.
I know what they must be going through now.
We never know what tomorrow brings.
May his soul rest in peace.

Condolences to his friends and family as I am sure this pilgrim / friend / father / husband / brother will be missed.

As for me, I will toast his life at dinner tonight back home in Canada. We will all go someday and that is how I would like to go - walking the Camino or taking another journey. Some day I want to "go out with my boots on!"

Regards and a respectful toast to this fellow pilgrim!

May the angels finish your journey peregrino and escort you to the heavenly gates... RIP. May his friends and family take comfort in their memories and knowledge he died doing what he wanted to do.

Buen Camino, Peregrino. And wishes of comfort to those who will miss him. But what better place to go. And go we all must. I can’t help but think there must be a special blessing in dying like this. Maybe it’s a triumph and not a tragedy.

Very accidentally I heard about this because he was a collegue of my cousin. His name was Lion Spijkers, married and father. He was walking the camino from Leon, together with his brother and nephew. Very tragic.
