In the mountains of Cadiz, there is a place that is very special to me. I go there "on retreat" every September. It is called Benamahoma and the focus for me is always a small pilgrimage to a shrine which houses a statue. Beneath the statue there is the "fuente" of the Rio Majaceite and the sweetest water I have ever tasted. Just above it is the following poem. I have just posted it on the blog and thought that I might share it with you:
Nacimiento de Benamahoma
Un Romano Peregrino
Nos narra a continuacion
Una historia del Camino
De su Peregrinacion
“Vine Galicia a Roma
Desde Galicia a Jerez
y alli en Benamahoma
Andando campo a traves
Todo el Camino sedento
Rechesandome la sed
Para gozar la sed
Hal retarme el nacimiento”
It is the story of a pilgrim, travelling from Rome and Galicia to Benamahoma. All the time he (or she?) is travelling, the one thing he is thinking, while he is so thirsty, is of is tasting the water of the source. I've made a loose translation on the blog, but anyone with better Spanish than I might like to do so here as a separate post.
