Not sure that 'Like' is the right response, but thanks for the information @ivar .
I wonder if some will postpone their pilgrimage and if it will affect the numbers next year?
It will be good to see the west front again, we might plan a ride into Santiago when in Galicia next year. :)

Temporarily, as the works progress. in view of having everything hunky dory for the next Holy Year. C'est la vie...

Looking forward to seeing the cathedral with all the renovations done. Should be spectacular. I'll do other Camino's, but after being in Santiago three times now, will time my next trip there when it is completely done.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Life requires adjustments. I have seen no scaffolding, Holy Year doings, scaffold up, and hope to see this new move too. Something to add to camino story. However, I feel for pilgrims who'll miss the swing and Cathedral in foreseeable future.

I'm happy to hear that, at least the facade of the Cathedral will be free of scaffolding when I get there next August. This will be my second camino but my husband and my brother's first. I'm sad that they are likely to miss the botafumiero swinging. But as with all of life, the Camino is about letting go and finding joy in what IS, not what might have been.

When I was there in 2014, it was the 80th anniversary of St Francis making his pilgrimage. So I've been to the Church of St Francis to get my Franciscan compostelae. The church there is beautiful.

Thank you for the info Ivar.

Lovely that it will be held in San Francisco - there's a very special feeling in there.
Not everyone will feel this way, of course, but without the botafumerio swinging (and the attendant circus of camera-clicking tourists), the mass will be more what it's meant to be.
Last year, I went to mass in San Francisco. A beautiful church and the congregation was mostly locals with just a handful of pilgrims. Now everyone is going to find out about this beautiful secret. Maybe, there wont be the same amount of tourists at the mass. My first experience of mass in the cathedral was one of mixed feelings. The tourists had occupied most of the seats and were sitting chatting. Pilgrims were in the wings in almost stunned silence. One tourist then rushed up pushing his way to the front of the line to snatch a Holy Eucharist from the priest's hand and stick it in his pocket. He must have thought it was a free souvenir. My instinct was to go after him and say or do something but my Protestant friend put his hand on my shoulder and said, 'leave it to the Lord'. So mass in San Francisco I am really looking forward to

We must be in parallel universes, @zolarose.
I was there too, but in my universe it had been the 800 year anniversary of St Francis's pilgrimage. Time in your universe goes much faster than in mine. I can't imagine what that must be like. :D:D

I too really like the ambience in the Church of San Francisco. Whilst I have always felt very moved by the pilgrim mass, this year I left before the botafumeiro swung. There was just too much pushing and shoving and disrespect taking place and I found it very uncomfortable. I shall enjoy a new experience next year.

Translation of extract from Galician Newspaper:

During 2018 there will be restrictions and the cult "will inevitably be reduced in capacity and schedules" from the moment that the works begin in the interior so "it will be impossible to maintain the service in the morning from Monday to Friday".

In this way, the liturgical act in the Cathedral will be limited to afternoon sessions and weekends, when the restoration work is not being carried out, although it may be held in a chapel.

The religious acts in during the hours that the basilica is closed will be carried out in the Church of San Francisco, for reasons of temple capacity and accessibility since it is a few meters from Praza do Obradoiro.

In any case, the director of the Cathedral Foundation, Daniel Lorenzo has assured that the intention is that the Pilgrim's Mass in the afternoon will be maintained.

Personally, as I'll be there in early June next year for religious reasons, I think this disruption will be a blessing. Yes it's an inconvenience, but the Lord has a way of using inconveniences like this to remind us of why we walk. Perhaps by taking away the spectacle at the end, it will encourage pilgrims to focus more on the journey and what can be learned along the way.

We will be walking the first time starting the beginning of May... will this affect us once we come to the church?
