Pontevedra is one of my favorite stops, I love the fish market there and the Santurio da Virxe Peregrina somehow reminds me of Iglesia de Santo Sepulcro in Torres del Rio - no octagon no Crusaders but both are built "unchurch" - rather more l as secure looking towers. But that's not what I wanted to write.
Christopher Columbus is no longer the popular figure I knew from my childhood - within certain circles anyway. The Italian navigator used charts prepared by Muslim and Jewish mapmakers, set sail fromPalos de la Fronterain in 1492 financed by monies confiscated from the Jews, and discovered the India/China in San Salvador and Cuba. Three ships the Nina, the Pinta, and - (here comes Pontevedra!) a ship built in Pontevedra - the Santa Maria.
So do enjoy the churches, Igrexa de San Francisco is believed to have been founded while the Saint was on pilgrimage to Santiago, but know too that a tiny bit of the New World may be found here as well.
