Such good news to start the Holy Year. 🙏

I don't speak Spanish, but I figured as much when the Papal Nuncio spoke at the end of mass. He'd already given his greetings and blessings from "Papa Francisco," so what was this? 😉 Between his expression and the spontaneous, enthusiastic and sustained applause at the end from everyone, including the archbishop, I figured that had to be the case. 😊

Thank you ,Ivar ,for setting up the live link to the opening of the holy door , the mass
and the wonderful concert of Galician music to finish off. What a spectacular programme!! Bravo TV Galicia.
Thanks to everyone involved in the renovation of the Cathedral .I was able to watch the programme on the restoration which was broadcast on Tuesday night.Such a magnificent transformation.
Happy New Year to everyone on this forum.Looking forward to 2021 and many more caminos.

After walking Via de la Plata in 2011, a couple of my walkingfriends and I planned to meet in Santiago 31.12.20 to take part in the opening of the Ańo Santo. Covid made a stop for that. So I watched the seremony and was glad to hear of the extension of the holy year. Maybe my last chance to go through that door.

My husband and I watched the entire ceremony. At the same time we both reacted to the Nuncio’s speech with "did we really hear and understand that?" I guess our comprehension is getting better. So thankful! Planning our post vaccination camino now!!

I was in Santiago for the St James Feast Day in the 2004 Holy Year. I had hoped to repeat the experience in 2021 but that seems very unlikely. Now it has been extended maybe I can in 2022!

Ivar,

Does that mean a celebration of St. James’s feast day next summer and 2022?

Or, just 2022?

The Feast is celebrated every year (though I believe 2020 was a bit muted), and it's one of the days in the year when you can gain the plenary indulgence by praying at the tomb of the Apostle, whether it's a Holy Year or not.

I guess what I mean is during Holy Year the King and Queen participate and it’s quite the big deal.

So, I am just wondering about that.

We will know more about that when we get closer to the date I think... but normally they would attend.
I tried to work out, yesterday, if that was the Prime Minister or the King who was seated by himself, near the front, on a special-looking red chair. Can you help, Ivar?

Such good news. Shows responsibility on the part of Pope Francis given what we’ve lived through in 2020. It will hopefully keep a covid-free flow (vs herd) of pilgrims towards and to Santiago in 2021 and 2022 so that all Camino routes blossom once again. My heart is feeling a flicker of hope to once again walk where millions have gone before me. Happy New Year to all! ❤️🕯

How annoying having a two year holy year. Now I have to start planning for 2022 also. Seriously, great news. Watched the whole ceremony yesterday, BTW thanks for the link Ivar, but never picked up on that. Love pope Francis but he has just gone up in the 'my favourite pope' chart. Never though anyone could knock JP2 of the top but big Franny has just done that. Happy new year everyone and buen camino. See you all on the trail in my minds eye

To Santiago and back (roads & paths; Tours; Francés; sea; roads & paths)
So, does that mean The door stays open, and is bricked up 31st Dec. 2022, not 2021?
Yes, it means that the Holy Door of the Santiago Cathedral will stay open until 31 December 2022 and that many of the events surrounding the Holy Year or planned in this context will be spread over two years instead of one year. The Santiago Holy Door wasn't bricked up, not even symbolically, it was just locked. I assume that this will not change.
