Thanks @Stefystar - I was really surprised to hear this, I thought they had just recently finished renovating it and had reopened it this summer 2018. I don't understand why they are closing it again... I couldn't find any articles about it in detail, but yes, i also saw it in the Galician news channel yesterday.

When I took a tour of Santiago this summer the guide told me that they just opened it briefly after the restoration, and that they will be adding glass walls (or something) to protect the restoration work from the elements.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
I can grasp a little Spanish so I heard while walking.. as they are closing the cathedral for restoration,( very needed I must say)
I was definetley not impressed by the use of security..I understand it has been a costly affair and 10 yrs ongoing but they forbid you to touch any of the surfices especially were pilgrims used to put they hand entering the p.da Gloria.
It was the first time I got to Santiago and able to enter the p. Da g., So I was a bit miffed by their stern approach to it.. pilgrims have a reverence for the cathedral.. I hope sincerely they will make a special pilgrims entrance fee.. when they reopen ..
But it ultimately I care for the Obradorio a great deal..I will pay what they ask
Have you managed to get in??

I waited in line 3 hours in August

Bless you!!
It puts my 1.30hrs under 27degrees to shame
But after I waited 2.30hrs for the Compostela after 24 km it felt quite a trial.
But we all do it

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

And from all of our hands. That indentation is a brilliant example of one hand being no big deal, but thousands having a huge effect.

You are respectful, but not everyone is. Just look at this.
All of us together have a cumulative effect.
If keeping my (and others') grubby mitts off the Tree of Jesse is what it takes to preserve it for future generations, that's a pretty small price to pay. I see it as a small gift to future pilgrims who will hopefully still be coming long after I am gone.

Hi V walking,
I totally agree with you to preserve it .
And as Trecile said earlier they may put a glass protection too.Well thought if they do.

But I also wish if they would take an imprint of the hand indentation and put it somewhere safe ( in plexiglass that could be replaced?)maybe in the pilgrim office as you get your Compostela?
I wanted to complete my pilgrimage with the gesture that signified I also got there, maybe a little selfish eh?
Well I place my hand in the air as a gesture , in front..that was me... I was there too

We got there a week ago at 8:30am thinking we'd get in early and beat the queue but it was still nearly 2 hours moving through the castle grid! Worth it though.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Hi...
Don't despair.. the main thing is what you are doing now...
Hopefully in your next Camino.. god willing.
Buen camino

I don't see why they couldn't protect the stone at the hand indentation with something like floor wax that could be cleaned and replaced easily.

I expect the concern is that the act of repeatedly cleaning and replacing the protective surface you describe would itself eventually further wear down the stone. Heck, we know the kind of erosion just water is capable of producing over centuries.

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

I got to see it Tuesday evening after a wait of 2.5 hours but worth the wait I felt privileged to see it

Pórtico de Gloria re-opening is projected for the 1st of December. Visits will be 10 €. But a combined ticket for the museum and the pórtico is12 €.

Looks like there will be free pilgrim visits, if they have a ticket picked up at the pilgrims office and their compostela.

There´s a little video on the news link, in which a cathedral official appears to be responding to what must have been criticisms from the government of that high price. He speaks in galego, but seems to be stressing that not one public euro went into the renovation.

I think one has to accept that the Portico de la Gloria is now primarily an exceptional work of art and will be treated as such. There was apparently a similar discussion 10 years ago when the first protective measures were introduced. A member of the Cathedral said at the time [my free translation]: "I remember that as a young man, in the Vatican, we all approached and touched Michelangelo's Pietá. This is no longer possible and the world hasn't ended."

BTW, what vaguely resembles the imprint of a hand or five fingers was there from the beginning. Early reports interpreted it as the hand of God. It's not known when people started to place their hand on it. It apparently became popular due to a photograph taken at the beginning of the 20th century afaik.

I'm just wondering how much of a difference all the hoopla has made in increasing public demand to see the Pórtico.

Since my first introduction to it in 2000, I have always made a point to spend a chunk of time there every year (at least till it was closed, and then I managed to take scaffolding tours a couple of time, they were AMAZING!!!!). I have to say I never noticed any particular mob. Any crowds I came across were always a tour group with at least half of the people not paying much attention anyway.

Maybe it's the fabulous restoration that has made romanesque lovers out of all of us, but I bet it's more a situation of induced demand and the fact that limiting access just makes more of us want to be able to go.

I'm not objecting to the charge because I think maintenance of these precious works is essential, and I am not suggesting that the Cathedral has cleverly tried to create demand by closing it off, but it looks like that´s how human nature works, at least according to the economists.

The Galicia Rail pass is available to anyone who completes the Camino and is awarded the completion certificate. It allows for 3 days of train travel and also discounts to other places you may...
Has anybody recently volunteered at the Pilgrim office for the 15 day timeframe? Where did you stay in Santiago?
For those who are in Santiago 🙏🏻
